I was reading the "Secret Footballer" article in the Guardian yesterday and he was quoting depression in football and the unseen pressure.
Just hammers home how they are no different from you and me (sometimes the wages get in the way...
Just so very very sad. RIP Gary Speed

While death from mental illness is a sad event, I can't help but feel that a serviceman killed in the line of duty should carry equal weight in the news.

Been in a pretty sombre mood all day after hearing about this earlier. Tragic for everyone connected to Gary and for Welsh football. Can't imagine what his family must be going through. Sad, sad, day.

Just to mirror everyone's thoughts I'm in absolute shock. Wales were doing so well, he'd got them from below the 100's to the 50's in the world ranking. Astonishing. Where does that leave Welsh football then?

This written in the Guardian by 'The Secret Footballer' just this Friday, about the depression in football: ''In my own way, I have learnt to cope with the side-effects of this game but only because I believe, in fact I know, that if some of those involved with football have arrived at a moment in their lives where they feel that standing in front of a train or slitting their wrists in a hotel room is the only way out, then it isn't just a game any more, is it?'' www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/nov/25/the-secret-footballer

"On many occasions, I have seen players affected by what somebody has said about them on a message board or in a newspaper. Even if there are 99 positive comments, they will put all their efforts into searching for the one negative remark and, subsequently, put all their energy into worrying about it."
Interesting!

Certainly ought to make people realise that their comments, even when posted on a forum, can have an impact. Fair enough if you want to criticise a player's technical ability, but some people are downright abusive. There's never any need for it.

I think that's a pretty common thing in life- you can have 10 compliments from people but obsess on the 1 negative thing that someone will say about you. As for mental illness, it's still pretty much a taboo in this country. It's very hard for someone who is depressed to admit to it- those around you will probably tell you to pull yourself together and it's really not that easy. I personally have seen the effects that suicide by a mentally ill loved one can have on those left behind. I saw Football Focus on saturday and was truly shocked by this news as he seemed perfectly ok. It happens far too frequently and most people are unaware that the person who did it was at such a stage in their life and until people who are suffering in this way are made to feel there is really some sort of help out there rather than being told to cheer up and get over it, it will continue to happen.

It is genuinely shocking news. That Dan Walker blog is a very real account of an 'outsider's' perspective on it. Stan Collymore tweeted about his experiences of depression on Saturday morning, offering a candid insight into how he was feeling, including his thoughts on suicide. It's a sobering read, especially in light of what was to happen around 24 hours later: www.twitlonger.com/show/ecoqm1

We can only hope that this tragic death helps to bring about a better and wider understanding of depression, anxiety and other mental problems. Thanks are due to Stan Collymore and the Secret Footballer for their honesty, strength and readiness to expose their troubles, in a world where men are still mocked for revealing their emotions.
I could write much, much more, and one day I will.

Absolutely dreadful news. I had the great pleasure of talking to Gary at Rotterdam Airport a few years back after Newcastle had won at Feyenoord in a superb game in the Champions League the night before, a game I had been to as part of my company's work with NUFC at that time. He was without a doubt one of the nicest people you could wish to meet, and I've always thought very highly of him since then. I am sure that so many will be really saddened by this, particularly by the thought that he just seemed so happy, normal and full of life right up to the end.

I doubt very much a disturbed mind would differentiate between a critical comment on technical ability and downright abuse. But you are quite right, there is never any need for it.

But of course we don't know it was depression officially and just a guess. If its not, someone has to be in a very dark place anyway to choose that option. I wonder if any background will ever come out. Still gutted about it today

It may be the wrong thing to be thinking about at the moment, but something doesn't add up. A man seemingly with the world at his feet, who was on national media in Football Focus talking about future hopes for Wales and about his family, then hangs himself a matter of hours later. Was there an event inbetween that triggered this? Or was he masking something during Football Focus? People have been very quick to cite depression as the reason without anything to validate this, but it is a likely scenario.
Regardless, it's a tragedy and a massive loss to football. I hope his family are properly looked after.
