I think the time had come for IronJoe. For him and us. To be at his effective best at this level he had to be right at the peak of his ability week in week out and that's very hard to maintain for two seasons. The mistake was not taking the opportunity to properly improve the squad rather than letting him leave.
Really happy to see him doing well at Donny.

I'd like to keep:
Mannion Andrew Lennet Gibbons Rossi Jobe
I'd also be quite content with: Stevens Morro Rennet Jubs
Which really does highlight the quality we have in defence. Ten players with a role to play, and no defender I'd like to bin off. I just wouldn't want to see Rennet and Morro as a back two.
Elsewhere, I'd probably keep: Thomas Digby Brophy Ahadme
Which is four players for all of midfield and attack.
The job is clear.

In midfield, Digby, Thomas, Lankester and Adam May are all under contract for next season AFAIK, so we may struggle to bin them off. I want Diggers to stay anyway, he gives us a steel that is hard to replace and will always put the team first, a real leader. Tuesday night's performance, in an unfamiliar role, was a great example. I worry with Thomas about the injury, because we've seen before how that can destroy a good player (Adam May), but pre-injury I loved the guy. Hopefully he can recover well. I'd be quite happy to see May move on, her perhaps needs it himself, and I think Jack has unfortunately been a complete failure as the creative heartbeat of the team. Maybe our style of play just doesn't suit him, but when I see either of our full backs bombing down the wing, or Brophy, I wonder if we're going to create a chance. Sure, we might give it away cheaply, but we also might create something. When Lankester gets on the ball in the middle of the park, I know nothing will come of it.

I do think people need to make peace with the idea that, as long as we're in L1 next season, Cousins is going to be offered a new contract.

That was in response to Sandy actually. And the general vibe of the discussions around Cousins.
What did UTAS say?

Cousins at his best is very good and at least he's managed a good number of games this season. The 'being in League One' bit is also rather appealing.

As much as this season has been a slog, I'd focus on those that should probably be moved on, to create room in the squad for some freshening up. For me I'd try to move on:
Holden (assuming we keep both Mannion and Stevens), Rennett, Haunstrup, May, Simper, Lankester, Janneh, Taylor, Bonne, and Okenabirhie.
That's 10 players, most of whom must be at the top end of our wage bill, and tellingly mostly in the midfield and forward areas, which really highlights where we've struggled this year. With Dunk leaving and Yearn also off, that's quite a bit of room to play with for new recruits.
Of the loan players, I'd like to keep both Gibbons (adaptable, and a big heart), and Gassan if possible.
Of the remaining squad, I'd want to keep the rest, even though some like Kaikai and Kachunga haven't quite had the seasons I think we expected when they signed. Defence needs a couple of experienced additions, but with the promise of Jobe, Rossi and Okedina (I still think he has something to show), I'm not sure major surgery is required there.

No denying that Cousins has been not bad to one of our better performers during Monk’s tenure (excluding Lincoln and Reading) but he is so much better when we don’t have the ball than when we do have it. Like a NFL defence player being thrown into the offence side of the team. I think we need a CM who is much more comfortable on the ball and is a natural passer. That sort of player will cost £££ for this level and I’d rather we paid a top end wage to a player in the Boateng mould. We already have a midfield destroyer contracted for next season in Digby. I think Monk will want us to have the ball more and dictate games rather than the constant low block with counter attacks down the flanks and hoofs to a big man.
So for me, Cousins should be released and wished well for the future.

I would certainly be releasing Cousins ahead of making Lankester available. The lack of game time Jack has had under Monk is a little baffling but I think he fits in more to what I expect a Monk team will look like next season than what Cousins does. He was also given a long contract due to the fact we clearly saw potential in him, think it would be wrong to ditch him with a year left of that.

Jack Lankester is a really frustrating player for me. Clearly talented in bursts but gives the ball away far too easy, his passing is inconsistent at best and he commits too many unnecessary fouls.
More than anything I just want a squad next year who can string more than three passes together in the other team's half.
