As an after thought.
In future, it might be wise to reverse into a parking spot. You can then drive out being able to see what you are driving into.

There's no one quite as thick as people who try to reverse out on to main to roads, and this is solid advice. Although speaking to your insurer = you'll get Jabo Ibhered up the poop pipe whatever happens.

I guess, but you're either reversing off of a main road or reversing onto one. Both have enough visibility problems that one is not significantly superior than the other for me - admittedly it's been over a decade since I drove anywhere but that was certainly my experience at the time.

Parking off a main road is a nightmare at busy times, I can appreciate that and glad I have never lived that close to a main road to have to do it. However, reversing off is much safer than reversing on; cars will tend to slow down and stop if you want to reverse park, much more so than to allow you to reverse into traffic. One option of course is to drive on when returning home, then when the traffic is lighter, turn it around. But I guess most people are too lazy to do that.

In the interest of openness, I will update. The gentleman wrote to me today saying his repairs would cost 300 euros and has a witness to the incident (his pal who could not have seen but was nevertheless present in the car park). I told him I didn't accept liability, he was welcome to go through insurance company but I would have to counter claim. I said maybe best if we called it bad luck and looked after our own repairs. I was just imagining I pay him some money and the next day he has whiplash or lost earnings or whatever. Added that I understand he has to do what's best for him (dishonest or not - I didn't say that). This sort of stuff quickly becomes very stressful doesn't it. I put a cricket 🏏 emoji at the end to see if that would help. If it helps I know a couple of people who are handy with a cricket bat. BTW they haven't played the game for a few years.

Andrew If you reverse in from the main road, you are the traffic and you 'control' the situation. If you reverse out on to the main road, not only can you not see as well, but you also have to wait for it to be clear/someone to take pity and let you out. It's a no brainer IMHO.

Fair enough. I've never had much of a problem being let out in any country I've driven in though. 🤷🏻♂️

Minor Car Nudge is a great name for a band. Looking forward to their debut, What Did I Do Wrong?
