New laptop required, mostly for general use and lots of writing. Priorities are a clear display, a keyboard that’s nice to use, lightweight and long battery life. Budget up to £999.

I was looking at laptops a month or so ago. I think the best offer I found was the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus. More powerful and better performance than a MacBook / Dell XPS and is a lot cheaper.
Will be fairly future proof with i7 and a decent graphics card built in. Also comes with decent SSD and 4k screen I believe but it’s a Dell so you can play around with the configuration.
I decided against it in the end but that was the best value for money I could find. Hope this helps.

Thank you. I’m just lost amid the sheer volume of different laptops, and yet I imagine in many cases the differences to the average user are minimal.

It’s a work computer so not my expense anyway but seems to tick all the boxes I need.

How are you finding your laptop Russ?
I am in a similar position to you now - need a laptop primarily because I am going to be studying again but would like something I can load music recording software on too.

I've not laid hands on it yet! Start my new job on Monday so I'll get to grips with it then. As someone who doesn't know a great deal about laptops, I suspect I'll be easily pleased, especially as I'm not in need of one that does anything particularly special.

If you can afford it, go with Apple. None of this booting up crap that takes 20 minutes that you get with Microsoft, no need to install firewalls or antivirus.

Neither of those have been a thing for over a decade, friend. As much as Windows 8 gets stick for its Metro UI, fast boot and the improved Windows Defender were introduced way back in 2012. Not 2004, mind. 😉

As someone who works in IT and is a Mac engineer, do not go for an Apple laptop. The build quality is horrendous and for the price you pay you can get a far superior Windows machine

One of those, you buy cheap you get cheap A 1500 pound laptop would last you a good 6-7 years comfortably. My current laptop is around 7 years old but was a 2k laptop when it was first purchased, still runs Football manager like a dream
