City playing their first home game might have an affect on what will already be a suppressed Abbey attendance for the FA Cup game against Wigan, particularly among floating supporters in the area.
But good luck to them

In the distant past before I was driving I’d often pop over to Milton Road to watch City if we had a long away trip which I couldn’t make. Always enjoyed games there and recently ventured over the St Ives to watch them too. Whilst I’d far rather they’d found a site in Cambridge, Sawston is a really exciting development for them and I’m looking forward to a visit. A strong City is really helpful for us too - they are just too low for them to be a sensible loan destination for our boys atm - let’s hope they can get back to Conference South at some point and then we suddenly have a really valuable local partner again. The photos of the new ground look excellent. You say that, but there have been a few of the youth team that have benefitted from being on loan at Step 4 clubs recently. Kaunda is a great example, at Biggleswade FC (where he was loved!), before going up to St Ives. And of course, Sunt Neots was a destination club at Step 4 for a lot of our youngsters before the wheels fell off that wagon. I guess we're talking the older lads who need some game time near step 2 or step 1.

Yes, but there is still a need to get some experience of men's football for the younger lads, City haven't really been used for that. Perhaps the two clubs don't agree on the pathway requirements?

I'm sure after what, a decade, without a home the first thing they're thinking is "God, I hope Cambridge United loan us Kaunda for three matches".

But good luck to them I can't see that having much of an effect to be honest, 2nd round FA cup game against previous winners of the FA cup will have more far more attraction. But I do hope it works out for City though.

I don't ever remember us having a good relationship with City, maybe that will change, but the truth is alot of their older fans detest us.

Didn't realise until today that we both applied for the name Cambridge City. Their letter arrived first, they got the name. We became Cambridge United. The year - 1951. They also had the opportunity to go professional in the 1930s alongside their bitter rivals, Ipswich Town. They turned it down to stay true to their amateur roots. History could have been very different.

What was the year of that spiffer of a punch-up between the two clubs' players and then the fans, which presaged an abandonment of the match? 1965?

After W W 2 city were offered the chance to join the football league. They turned it down to stay true blue amateur. Ipswich were the offered city's place, and they accepted. The battle between U's and City, fans and others was around 1967 68 I think. I was there. It was an amazing spectacle!!!! It was on a Tuesday night in the eastern professional floodlit cup. The Mickey mouse cup of it's day.

Didn’t it kick off in the county cup around the same time?

What was the year of that spiffer of a punch-up between the two clubs' players and then the fans, which presaged an abandonment of the match? 1965? It was between 1968 and 1970.It was instigated by Dai Ward who later on became a good friend of mine having worked at Cambridge University Press printing with me for many years. He won 2 caps for Wales, both against England. He should have gone to the 1958 World Cup with Wales, but I his words,he was a bit of a rebel and messed it up.He was only 5f8 but hard as nails.I was also there at the abandoned game between United and City.
