For me, a plastic club is where the owners/players are disconnected to their fanbase and their community. The amount of money an owner puts into a club is irrelevant. I also think it's quite fluid as well. For instance, Darlington is not a plastic club but have in their history and suffered the consequence.
For me, a plastic fan is one who supports a club purely for success and drops them when the trophy count dips. For instance, Man City probably have their fair share of plastic fans. However, I'm sure there are plenty who value Shaun Goater's contribution just as much as Erling Haaland's.
As a Cambridge fan, I have favourite players who only ever played for us in non-league and others who went on to play international football.

There is no such thing as a plastic club, it's just a term opposing fans use to belittle the achievements of another club. All clubs are associated with a place, have their own fans, and have investors who will be involved for personal reasons, and for that reason all clubs are totally legit. Kentish There's probably a large amount of truth in this. I would have two areas of challenge though. The first is where ownership is purely business related and investment could have been for any club in any country within any sport. The second is the curious case of MK Dons!

Plenty of plastic fans, few plastic clubs. But plastic clubs have a high proportion of plastic fans.
Milton Keynes Dons are the most plastic club in the football league. Salford & Forest Green are also plastic but a long, long way behind. Can’t really think of any others. Rushden and Diamonds & Histon two other good examples of historic plastic teams. Wrexham are not plastic, a proper club.
Not sure if plasticity is a permanent property or not

The question of permanence.
How long, if ever, were Manchester United a plastic club are they received huge investment for the time, and changed their colours to red and their name from Newton Heath?

As others have said, the issue with Wrexham is that they have achieved things as "underdogs" according to the media, but actually, if you're spending 5x what your opponents are, you have to be really bad to fail.
They will find it harder in the coming seasons because of P&S rules and the fact that they're now going to be in a league with some big boys, even if a couple of them will be going up.
That and some Wrexham fans acting like the club are going to be "back where they belong" when in truth they have been a non league side for 15 years and haven't done anything in the third tier since the late 90s. Were averaging gates of 4,000 before Hollywood came along. So they are very much like us, a club who is in the third tier when it's going well, in the basement tier when it's normal and drops into non-league when it's a disaster.

I mean Wrexham are 'only' spending a million more than MK, or 2 million more than FGR. Not quite the disparity it was probably in the Conference but still significantly more.

Good post. Where to begin? My first reaction is along the lines of 'if a club has history' then they can't be a plastic club. So Wrexham get a pass on that basis. I think that history matters. But then I think again and consider would we have been given a pass in 1970 as we had no previous history in the FL. I don't know about the phrase 'plastic' club but prefer 'hobby club'....it's much more interesting because Wrexham definitely fall into that category....as do FGR, Newcastle Utd and Man City plus countless others. As I said, where to begin? And us then

Given they are being discussed in the other thread, Fleetwood should be on the list. Only where they are due to 'crooked' money!

I thought that was sarcasm, but yes there is a Real Bedford. They are crypto-backed, whatever that really means. Bedford Town still going too. They must be pleased.

Even better, their grounds are yards apart, literally. If dave Stacey is still around this MB, I am sure he can relate some tales of the friction between the 2 clubs!

Didn’t he flounce years ago? I haven't seen him on here by his own name for a long while, but he could be using an alias of course!
