Now that the Park and ride is closing there is a large parking area already marked out, next to the driving range. A shame we can't have that site. It would be fairly cheap to develop and would suit the club. I think they have a far smaller patch of ground in mind for us than the P&R and driving range combined.
This affects two potential sites for the new stadium. I'm not too happy about a site next to a working sewage plant. Hardly a crowd pleaser.
What is taken with one hand is given back with the other. As I predicted, Marshall aren't going anywhere. So the big housing scheme on the airport is fiction. This reopens the possibility of the site between Marshall's Vehicles and the Park and Ride. I hope that horse trading can be done to make it happen. An airport and factory are never going to complain about noise from a stadium. It seems the ideal site to me. And we get to keep the 'Newmarket Road' song. ;D

I'm pleased Marshalls are staying put. They are an important employer for Cambridge. It would have been desparately sad to see them move away from the area for the sake of a few houses, a tesco store, retail park and football stadium that can all go elsewhere. The site in Cowley Road is too small unless more room can be provided. It will be interesting to see which sites make the shortlist and have a real chance of being developed. The land by the park and ride site on Newmarket Road would be ideal, but I've seen nothing to suggest this is available as a possibility.

The Area Action Plan has been cancelled. So new plans are possible. Any development there would have to be light industrial (or a stadium) or be blighted by the airport approach path. A trade off with Grosvenor Estates could save their bacon. Nothing official, just my view of it.
Any training pitches could double up as a driving range at night/off peak. Another income stream. Ian Darler would need a golf ball collecting scoop/brush for his tractor.

Moving wil be a wrench , but it has to happen for the club to prosper and generate more income, and hypothetically more on field success.

The 'Action Plan' was a complete work of fiction in the first place. Marshall had about as much interest of selling as CUFC has of winning the Champions League next season - ie: nil.
I cannot believe our 'high quality' local council and the legions of overpaid quangos which go alongside it actually wasted the time they did on Cambridge East - it was stupidity in the extreme when all they really needed to do in the first place was pick up a phone and talk to Sir Michael in an open and frank manner. They would have got an open and frank answer, and years of time and oodles of money would have been saved, time to get other options onto the table.
The piece of land between the Newmarket Road P&R and Marshall would be absolutely perfect for CUFC, in the context of a larger overall development. All it needs is some pragmatic thought and action and it could happen.

I think someone on here (Will Jones maybe?) said it was planned for September.

I agree that Marshall's seemed like a almost certain no go, however NIAB, Cley Farm and Trumpington Meadows were successful and thousands of houses are due to be built. CCC can't just say there is nowhere to build, they must provide possible sites no matter what the likelyhood of the builds are. I like the idea of Cowley road. Most people live in the north and west of the city, It is near the A14 for those that drive and it might encourage the building of a train station in Chesterton. As for Cowley road being too small, I reckon that the land is bigger than we think.

I'm pretty sure it is too small. It's not a guess, it was in the original planning report that said that the cowley road site would only hold a stadium of around 6,000 without the training pitches etc that were planned for other sites.
Regardless of that I really don't fancy breathing in the smell of raw sewage when watching a football match. IF they moved the sewage works and found a bigger site then it might be ok
No idea where you've got the idea that 'most people live in the north and west of the city. I think our fanbase still centres more on the east with fans coming from areas like Chesterton, Abbey + Cherry Hinton more than Newnham, Arbury and Trumpington etc. Population is much more dense on the east side of the city.

I am basing the fact that North and West of Cambridge have highest amount of people living there. East and West Chesterton are in the North of the City and Arbury and King Hedges are North West. This is from the Annual demographic and socio-economic report produced by Cambridgshire County Council.
Sorry to be a geek!

I was quite puzzled by the assertion that most people live in the north and west of the City. Assuming Arbury, Castle, Chesterton, King's Hedges and Newnham are taken as the relevant wards, the population there only accounts for 43% of the City's population (based on 2001 Census figures).
We'd be crazy to move to a site that wasn't large enough to accomodate a stadium of at least 10,000 with adequate space for non-footballing activities, adequate parking and other transport links, with scope for expansion. Otherwise we're losing our city location for no real benefit (the inevitable need to move accepted).

Still don't buy the fact that lots of people live in the west, you only have to look at a map to know that is wrong. They must be using a very bizarre method to make these calculations and picking a city centre that isn't actually the traditional city centre if the council think more people live on the west side than east. If you drew a line through market square, then only a tiny part of Cambridge is to the west. Chesterton is as eastern as you get.
Having just checked a map cowley road is pretty much directly North from the abbey so this argument might be a bit irrelevant! I would definitely agree that it makes more sense to be on the northern rather than southern side of the city though.

Didn't the club do a questionnaire a few years back that showed that there is a considerable number of regular United fans who don't live in Cambridge at all? I don't and never have done.
