I saw it in the Art Cinema when it first came out. A very slow film but based on actual events. It's caused a bit of uproar in Italy as it's the most unglamorous gangster film you'll see.

The thing about Gomorrah is that many of the actors who starred in the film actually portrayed themselves. It is also based on fact and if you ever get to see the DVD the interview with the author is a real eye opener on how far the corruption and power goes. For instance the Gomorrah had a surplus of guns which weren't very good so they had them used in a Hollywood film and hey presto everyone wanted one! It's a very very powerful film but I do agree it is a little slow. City of God is also another excellent and powerful film.

Mean Streets deserves a mention along with Point Blank Get Carter (Caine, not Stallone!)
Also check out Old Boy if you can handle subtitles. Great movie.

Old Boy is ace - Belly told me to watch it, and his synopsis basically was "it's about some bloke who gets captured and locked up, while he's there he does loads of training and then gets out and beats people up"

The Americans are really getting on my nerves. Why can't they just watch the original film with subtitles? It's not that hard. They ruin all the classics with their stupid remakes.

It's all about the Benjamins baby! It will no doubt make a profit at the box office (more through aggressive promotion than word-of-mouth) and that's all that matters in Hollywoodland.
Just looked on IMDB and it's rumoured that Josh Brolin may be starring. I'd have thought that they'd have gone for more of a box office attraction and done a flashy, high-octane Michael Mann type number. IMO it's the only way it could work. Take out all the honour, pride etc and replace it with CGI and rubbish. Make it as removed from the original as possible (only 8 years old!!) and maybe something watchable may remain. I just can't see Spike Lee doing this.
Anyway, enough of the Barry Normans.......

Mesrine movies are excellent I thought. Well worth checking out. And a bit different from your average gangster flick.
Killer instinct and public enemy number one.
Anyone else seen these?

Not really a gangster film but the "second" part of "Rise of the foot soldier" which relates to the drug dealing underworld in Essex in the 90's which resulted in the killing of Tate, Tucker & Rolfe, a good film close to the story line in Darren Nichols book "Bloggs 19".
The first part of this film which deals with Carlton Leech and his football hooligan life I found a bit boring and unrealistic.
Also seen "Bonded By Blood" with deals with the exact same story line but IMO isn't as good a film.

I've seen public enemy number one and liked it.
Watched Gangs of New York too and thought it was a really good film. I saw a documentary about the area in the team that the film was set before watching the film which made it even more interesting (even if a little bit untrue).
RayHertford - What's the name of the film your describing? Rise of the Foot soldier 2? Part 2?

I'm sorry to disagree with you Ray but those two films you mentioned are IMO dreadful. If you like your Danny Dyer type yarns then fair enough but I would class those films as wannabeegangester.
