Alfreton seem to have a manager who knows how to put a blend of youth, experience and motivation together to create a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts, can we poach him?

I think it's a combination of having the right manager and the right players. A great many managers that have succeeded in lower leagues have gone on to "bigger things" only to be dismal failures.

We need to realise we are a middling Conference Club and not think of ourselves as 'ex-League giants' as we seem to do. Even the Club have got sucked into it. I dropped my head in my hands when i watched the CUTV interview with Robert Smith when he admitted we're running a Conference Club as if we were getting Football League income.
For as long as we're going to overspend on a manager who don't know this league, a 'luxury' coach in Schofield, silly fitness programmes that blatantly aren't working, ridiculous 2/3 year contracts on average players and 'top eight' budgets we can't afford we're going to be stuck in this horrible cycle of needing financial assistance every few years.
If the people at the Club can't learn from previous mistakes what can we do?!

What we need is someone who can over achieve, is cheap as chips and can get the best out of average players. Inject a bit of togerthness and team spirit into the squad and play neat, crisp passing football as well (ok I'd settle for hoof ball if it got us out this league!). Not too much to ask!

John Beck meets at least some of those criteria. No thanks. I enjoyed the success just as much as the next person. I didn't enjoy the ridicule and stigma that he eventually saddled the club with though. Like many "geniuses", John Beck is also raving bonkers and too full of his own self belief to ever be worth the trouble.

Also, Shaggy's appointment was inevitable with the fan pressure for it, the board pretty much had to give him the job.

I'd go as far to say people would rather keep Ling here than sack him and appoint Carden as manager!! That would be probably the least inspiring appointment in the history of football....anywhere....ever. Ahem - Steve Thompson

He was given the job because he was the only person the Board thought would be tolerated by the fans pushing through the huge cuts in playing budget that had to be made. Given the financial circumstances he did a pretty good job too, epecially that first full season.

Poor old Shaggy. The sight of him hauling his 40 year old frame around the pitch after several years of retirement still haunts me.
Bah.

The worst was probably York away, he came on when we had a corner and started trying to rally the troops and it all got a bit cringeworthy after that!

Shaggy scored what's possibly the best goal I've ever seen away at York. An over-head kick from outside the penalty area. It was awesome.
Sorry, you can carry on slagging him off now.
