Never seen the American version myself. Has anyone seen the American version? Is the American version good? In last nights American version our very own David Brent made a cameo - here it is I smiled. It made me want to watch the office. Here is an interesting write-up about it - tunedin.blogs.time.com/2011/01/28/office-watch-kirk-meets-picard/Andrew

The American Office is so unbelievably bad, it's hard to believe they even ripped it off. Gone is everything that made the Office funny, and it's been replaced with that Steve chap from Anchorman who hasn't done anything funny in any film he's ever been in.
Avoid.

Wrong. The American Office is an average sitcom which is in no way a direct take on the English version - it's a completely different approach.
Steve Carell is funny. 40yearoldvirginfact.

It's a completely different approach which isn't funny. That's actually a good point though, he was quite amusing in that. Maybe I'm being overly harsh on him. Either way, the American Office is a very poor imitation of the proper Office*. *The proper office sounds like where all the BELTs hang out and tell jokes about Brian Saah's appendage. Hmm. It's not even comparable to The Office, which in my view was one of the best, if not the best, British television programmes of all time. Hustle. Although in terms of comedies, it's definitely a contender.

The American Office is, apart from the first handful of episodes which were based on storylines from the original, very different to the UK. It's one of a handful of middle-of-the-road US sitcoms on at any one time. It's not even comparable to The Office, which in my view was one of the best, if not the best, British television programmes of all time.

Agreed. The American Office is inferior to the UK one in every conceivable way. However, despite the obvious tendency to do so, I don't think the two should be compared.
The US version wasn't trying to achieve the same thing as the UK one. As a standalone sitcom, it's average. The problem it has when it comes to UK audiences watching it, is that we all immediately make those misguided comparisons.
It's not to my taste at all, but I wouldn't dismiss it as "so unbelievably bad" by any means.
On a side note, I'm developing an ever greater appreciation of Peep Show, which could well be my second favourite sitcom after The Office. Although Green Wing probably deserves to retain that mantle.

Fawlty Towers! And Partridge. Argh...ok:
The Office Fawlty Towers Alan Partridge Green Wing Peep Show Only Fools & Horses Blackadder Father Ted Dad's Army Red Dwarf Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Porridge
I haven't even mentioned Phoenix Nights, and I quite like Not Going Out...is there room for Bottom, The Young Ones?!
There's loads actually.

Spaced is brilliant, I found it completely by accident and love it. It doesn't seem to be very well known though, hardly anyone I speak to has watched it or even heard of it.

The American Office is decent so long as you can divorce yourself from thinking it's The Office only with Americans. It isn't, in any way. It's a completely different programme with a completely different approach.
Not a patch on the English one obviously but it's not a terrible programme.
