Yeah, I probably expected him to have played slightly higher up when he first broke through (I don't think he's ever played league 1 has he?) but he's had a very decent career.

I don't decry the longevity of his career, just the trajectory it took, when with a little more application to go with his undoubted skill and talent could have seen him stay at this level or even Championship, if he wanted it!
Talent gets you so far, mindset and application is the telling factor.

Talent gets you so far, mindset and application is the telling factor. You don't play 500+ appearances if you don't work hard. Especially when he dropped out of the league and managed to work his way back in Because he didn't make it as far as you thought he might doesn't mean anything really, I thought Coulson would have gone on to have a decent league 1 career. It didn't happen, I was wrong but what a career he had

As I said, I don't decry what he has achieved, but look at 'what might have been'. Talent gets you so far, and we saw in games he had plenty of that, its mental capacity and commitment to improve that allows a player to meet his potential.
What goes on between the ears is far more important than what a player does on the pitch, but if he is happy and feels his career has been worthwhile and rewarding, so be it.

But you're talking like a bit of hard work would have guaranteed to take him from the Vanarama to the championship. There are a lot of good footballers, the fact he managed to have a career and then got into league 2 shows progression & hard work There are no guarantees he'd get anywhere near league 1 or the championship and you are just assuming something went wrong to derail that. A lot of your argument is based on your opinion of how his career should have gone and not the reality of football

A lot of your argument is based on your opinion of how his career should have gone and not the reality of football Basing it on what I saw of him; he did well as a youngster at our level, well enough to secure a move to Luton, where he scored 1 in 4 goals at a team that were arguably a step up from us. When he signed for them, it was reported that there was interest from clubs further up the pyramid. My point about mindset is based on what I saw of him, a couple of times when he was left out of the team, he was sulky at the ground and verbally unhappy at not being involved. While it can be argued that not being happy at being left out of a squad shows determination and drive to succeed, reacting in a negative way in front of the supporters is not the right way to go about it. Potential gets you so far, having the right attitude when things don't go your way is a vital part of any sportsman's make up.

Young footballer not happy with being left out shocker The reported interest was his agent just quoting random clubs and hoping he'd create additional interest that never happened. He didn't make it to league 1, he clearly was never good enough for it. Having a bad attitude happens to lots of players and they usually die off immediately or knock about at much lower, less professional levels. Look at players like Moke

He’s actually a nice guy. And gave me a crackingly honest interview when he was with Stortford. Of course he worked hard to achieve what he has but he’s probably just a little bit too laid back to go a bit further. But that’s him. And he’s had a nice football career. I reckon most wannabe footballers on their mid 30s would’ve taken what he’s done. Though I’m fcked if I’d go to Barry on a regular basis…..

Look at players like Moke No, it was a Richard Money quote when he was manager of Luton at the time he signed. Your last point is entirely my point, players who could have done better with the right attitude. I can give you a good example, 25 years ago, at my local step 4 team, they played a PSF against Tottenham; 2 strikers, both aged 18 played in that game and gave the Tottenham CBs who were a young Ledley King and Anthony Gardner, a hard time. If you were to look at the two of them, one showed much more talent and potential than the other. The other was Jefferson Louis, who after a mediocre start to the season moved on and launched a career that saw him play for a number of professional clubs (and indeed, is still playing at Step 4 at 45 years of age!). The other lad was fine and did well for the club, but didn't have the drive and mentality to push himself on, which his potential suggested he should have achieved.

Saw Louis play last year, still doing it.
Also saw Carlos Edwards (45) and Jon Challinor (42 ish).
Love seeing those guys further down the leagues still going.
