Bit like mine with Woods - you could make a very strong case for Sampras not even being the best in his own sport, let alone all sports!

4th Calzaghe, 3rd Messi, 2nd Phelps, 1st Lionel Perez I could write a lengthy piece explaining why I've chosen the sportsmen in question, analysing their achievements and results whilst throwing in a few long words so suit the thread....na, boxer, baller, fish, legend @shangri_La_7

Gary Kasparov
You could make a serious case for Usain Bolt. As a kid Daley Thompson was an absolute hero of mine. I make Diego Maradonna to be the best footballer ever, despite hating his cheating guts. He has to be considered.
Just impossible to come up with the best sportsperson ever. Hard enough to decide on the best in each sport.
Edit: I forgot about Kim Jong-il and his incredible golfing talents. 38 under par and 11 holes in one in a round, whilst running a country. Hard to beat.

I think you could probably narrow it down to a credible list of contenders, though. Some of the usual names would crop up. Then again, people who prefer less well-known sports would champion the cause of sportspeople many of us have never heard of. Where are all these lengthy responses and long words that Cavey has seen, by the way?

Ah right. It's just that you said "to suit the thread" - thought I'd missed a page of lengthy responses and big words!

He doesn't have time, spends every minute he's awake training to be a kepper, total devotion. Have I told you about the time I took him to Che.... @shangri_La_7
