The thought of this with our current squad gives me the shudders like nails down a blackboard but it sounds like Monk will want to implement this style next season, hopefully in L1 😬, with a group of players he’s brought to the club.
It seems quite the en vogue thing to do now and is creeping further down the football league and has become such a common sight that when a defender or even keeper gets dispossessed on the edge of the area and concedes a goal, it’s just seen as a bog standard error and most people move swiftly on. Whereas 15 years ago, it would make it onto a Football blooper DVD.
I can see the benefits of it as it leaves a ton of space if you can play through the press but I fear that it needs a technical type of player which we will struggle to attract and afford unless our playing budget is significantly increased. Lloyd Jones was good at bringing the ball out and hopefully Rossi is showing signs that can be part of his game next season.
Also, would we need to increase the size of the pitch to allow more space out wide to maximise our ability to do this.
It could be an interesting start to next season if we adopt this tactic and there definitely will be some crowd frustration when the inevitable happens.

There is a time and a place for it. Subtle difference between playing out and coming out from the back. I’m fine with Rossi coming out with the ball, it definitely helped us at Blackpool in the second half, albeit we didn’t get anything out of the game, I’ll be fine if he tries it tomorrow, providing he’s sensible and does it at the right time.
Playing out is not something I want to see whilst we’re still in danger of going down. I can almost hear the howls of disapproval as a Rossi/Jobe pass gets intercepted and we go 1 down. We do need to find ways of easing the pressure though, good teams will eventually open us up if the ball is continuously coming back at us. But for now I think just concentrate on the basics, do that well and then worry about next season once we’ve put this one to bed.

As you say it really depends on who Monk is able to bring in. If you have players who can do it generally it seems to be effective but if you have players without the technical quality to execute it then it will be a struggle. Will definitely require some smart signings for us but I don't think it would be impossible to bring in players who can play that way if we look in the right places.
Anyway I think Monk has shown enough tactical nous that if he's unable to get a squad suited for that style he wouldn't try and force it, as he hasn't really done that so far this season.

Lumping the ball down the throats of the opposition and conceding possession over and over again just makes no sense anymore. It's Jurassic in fact, especially the higher up the you get. I think Rennett, Digby and Cousins have missed the boat with this one.

I dread the idea of Cambridge United side trying to play it out from the back. I can imagine how terrifying it would be. Please, don't even think about it.

You mention Lloyd Jones, and you’re right to. I saw him for Charlton at Burton Albion (don’t ask) and his manager had him playing in the middle of a back three where he passed to his right, collected it back, passed to his left, collected it … and so on. Pure Gateshead circa 2014. Ineffective as well as boring. He didn’t maraud once. What a waste. I think that Monk means more a central midfielder who picks the ball up from the central defenders and knits play more. Instead of the hoofball that we so commonly see.

I think Rennett, Digby and Cousins have missed the boat with this one. Agree with this and is what we got with Harris and would have got next season if he stayed. Hopefully Monk can build a fluid squad that can build from the back but also counter attack and hit teams on the break. My concern is the contracted midfield players at the club next year.

It's two way thing, as you also need an active and competent midfield. Having defenders that are comfortable on the ball helps. However, have seen many a team, where one of the midfielders drops back, to be the playmaker/ composer, from deeper. Unfortunately, I don't think we have one of these, and therefore can see this will be high on the shopping list.

To be fair, if we're looking at bringing in a Prem youngster on loan - presumably they'll want that yoof product playing out from the back vs more of a hoofball approach?
It could be a way of making ourselves more attractive to A Different Type Of Player and fishing in a different pool with higher potential rewards

I half hoped we were looking to progress into being a side that was comfortable on the ball this season actually. It was something Bonner said we needed to move towards and, I assume, part of the reason we bought in Betsy.
Anyway, it was interesting to hear Monk talk about his plans for our development next season.

Apart from the obvious risks it can also be quite boring to watch. Some teams can do it well but mostly I find it a bit dull.

There are many ways to skin a cat, and as long is it doesn't end up like that funkytown video, that's fine by me.

Anyway, it was interesting to hear Monk talk about his plans for our development next season. Andrew I think we shouldn't get too worried about the concept of 'playing out from the back', whatever it means in its various manifestations. As Andrew and indeed others have posted, it's reassuring hearing a manager talk about next season and further development, and hopefully that continues season after season ...for a bit anyway. I'm increasingly warming to Monk. And enjoying his press conferences. He seems to know what he wants. Let's get our League One status secured and then watch how he builds a new squad.

Before we start dreaming of playing like Brazil ,ill settle for hoof ball , low block low possession to get this team over the finish line this season

Yeah agreed because we simply can't play any other way with this squad.
The promotion side under Bonner had a bit of everything didn't it, that was great balance of options. We had the Irish Messi getting us playing but we also had Big Joe and Mullin feeding off him. Everyone else slotted in around those guys. It was far from possession based football, probably more the opposite, but when we did attack we attcked with pace and numbers, great to watch, bit like the Roy Mac team.
