I went there in Jan 2018, cost me £14 a return ticket. Hotel cost me £40 for a 5 star right in the old town.
I lived like a king for 3 nights and spent £100 tops. Sopot is really nice, local beach town. 10 mins away on the train, has a brewery restaurant which was very nice
We also went to the zoo and it cost about £3 to get in. Also got a train for an hour to Malbork castle which was good if you like a bit of that
Football was on a winter break so didn't get to go but I've heard from others its great. The only downside is there isn't a whole lot to see in the old town, a quick 2 hour walk and you've seen it all.
I am planning on going back at some point as I loved it

I have no advice. I had booked flights to go there in 2015 to see a couple of friends who lived there but I had to cancel in the end. So it's still on my list.

Apparently the beach is lovely in the summer, gets really warm out there. Think there's a few WW2 Related museums in the new town side of things. My advice I forgot to add, Uber everywhere you can it's dirt cheap. Its one of the few places ive been where English is not overly used so unless you speak Russian/Polish get your miming prepared

I visited Gdansk in 2018 on route to Kaliningrad for the Russia world cup and was very impressed. Nice historic town. The view from the cathedral tower is impressive as were the restaurants and bar area facing the docks, watching the motorised 4 seater boats to hire that look like cars. Obviously the Gdansk shipyard from the more modern history, but that was a little disappointing in my opinion. I was actually going to say why not hire a bike and cycle to Sopot, to the Sandy beaches, unfortunately very windy on the seafront when I was there, but nice easy cycling in flat roads with little traffic between the three towns of Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia. When visiting Eastern Europe I find the free to download 'inyourpocket' guide to be just as good as other guidebooks that I have brought. As always the Free walking tours are quite good, effectively just paying what you think is appropriate as a tip. (Not that is of general interest but Sopot was for a few years (1977-80) the place where Intervision was started as the Eastern European copy of the west's Eurovision.)

Just got back after a week in Sopot and can't praise the place enough. The beach and surrounding area was lovely. The locals were friendly and helpful, although as Denton mentioned, English is not widely used, but we got by easily enough.
The food was really good, and cheap, but think vegetarians/vegans may struggle as most dishes included meat. The brewery/restaurant Denton mention was great and they had a lovely english brown ale.
Went round a few museums in Gdansk, the WWII one was very interesting, the zoo was great and even got to sail in a pirate ship (but we were not allowed to pillage and plunder which was disappointing). We also found a great water park in Sopot with both indoor and outdoor pools and a few water slides.
Will definately go back

As i'm tempted to go back in September

You either need to be fully vaccinated or you need a negative test on entrance to the country, but that is coming from Denmark. Not sure if it is different from England.
Of course, this can change as infection rates go up and down.
Whilst in Poland, it was a little bit hit and miss with restrictions. Nobody really kept their distance and shops, pubs and restaurants had signs saying you needed to wear face masks but most people didn't bother. Trains and taxis/uber were the only places where they had to be worn.
