Awful for Adam. Hope he makes a full recovery. Deciding not to bolster midfield in the summer has proven to workout great for us. Absolute rubbish show. Was obvious to most that we lacked numbers. Good opportunity for Simper to try and break into the first team, with January not too far off to reinforce if needed. Still Digby, O'Neil, Lankester, Simper, Worman to pick there, plus Taylor as the emergency backup to Digby I'd imagine. Not too desperate yet imo.

O'Neil is injury prone and has been caught lacking a few times so far this season, Lankester isn't trusted enough by Bonner to get a sustained run in the team, supposedly we've been trying to loan Worman out. Simper is clearly rated by the club but only time will really tell on him. We are pretty reliant now on Digby and he's got a knock to the shin. And to add to all that is the massive creative hole in midfield that we've had since Wes left. Been said on here before but we should have gotten a midfielder in on loan in the summer.

Yeah it's not an issue of numbers. The relative strength/quality of those numbers is where the question could be asked however.

The midfielders we do have are all very similar and the gap in quality between the two first choice and the rest is pretty big. By not signing anyone in the summer we were putting on a lot of reliance on Digby and May.

Its always a risk with O'Neil because his body isn't up to it. When did he last actually play 90 minutes? Simper is showing promise and hopefully takes the opportunity but if Digby is out then we are going to be stretched. Expect we will sign someone in January but thats 11 weeks away.

Dreadful news and I feel so sorry for Adam. Hope he gets through this as quickly as he can, but it is not an injury to rush given how important it is to recover from properly. I wrecked my MCL (Medial, on the inside of the knee) last December when I did nothing more than slip on a kerbstone leaving the Valley after our game at Charlton. I’m still getting grief from it now and am not ready to even kick a ball in the park with my son. I’m much older and fatter than Adam so it will take me longer to repair but it goes to show that knee ligament injuries are really problematic. Well, this is news indeed, so it is. Pray Gerald, do elaborate.

I suspect the lack of a signing may have been partly driven by our faith in Simper, and possibly the failure to get Worman out on loan too.
Simper looks like a talented lad so I have no issue with him getting a chance to prove that until January, we can look at it again then if need be. Not sure why Wormans loan never happened but it would have freed up space in the squad for us to bring one in.

As I texted a pal earlier, I would imagine that the May, Ironside and Mitov household isn't in the greatest spirits at the moment.
Get well soon Adam. I think Simper and O'Neil will be given the nod but, no question, we'll bring some loan numbers in come January.

"One" position that by default has 2 or 3 players playing in it in any given eleven? Digby, May, O'Neil, Simper & Worman for the "classic" 2. Lankester & Taylor have also both played in there for us. If you want to include the hole as a midfielder in that sense (which you have to if you're including Hoolahan really), then Lankester & Knibbs also come into the numbers. Every position in our XI in a 4-2-3-1 has at least 2 players that can play in it as a "first" position, aside from right-back really, with Bennett out on loan. And even there the cover is someone who spent most of their academy career in it. Add in "can play as..." and many of them have 3, 4 or even 5 who can cover it. In terms of availability, we've got 2 injuries in central midfield & still are picking from 3 others.

Guessing he and Knibbs are pretty close – Knibbs warmed up in May's shirt on Saturday & made an "A" with his fingers after scoring yesterday. Nice gesture.

Yeah I can see this one happening on loan. Luke could play in the hole or next to Digby.
Maybe we'll take a fee for Knibbs in January if we can get Luke in for a season loan.

Knibbs just seems like a genuinely very nice guy doesn’t he? And yet still finds time to celebrate his goals in front of the opposing fans and gives them a little shush sometimes.
