If Cousins didn't have injury concerns, then we'd have been delighted to have signed him on a 2 year deal.
He does have injury concerns, so it looks like we signed him on a 1+1 deal where the 2nd year only activates if he stayed fit enough to play most games.
Without any hindsight, I think we'd all have been very happy with that when he signed. If he was a crock we could get rid, if not then we'd hopefully keep him. It's maybe not worked out that way, but win some you lose some.

I think it's obvious we'll be a very different beast next season in how we set up, so I think the Digby Cousins defensive partnership will be a thing of the past, and we'll see them rotated with Thomas/someone new alongside. Hopefully we'll see these players who've clearly had something about them in the past, show what they can do.

Good news. A very good player who had a dip of form at a bad time and then became a bit of a scapegoat amongst some. I’m beginning to think you just troll. Whatever next? Bennett as a winger. I'm being serious. Don't get me wrong, the dip in form was pretty severe. But no worse than Digby. At his best he's a very good player who will dominate defensive midfield. We have seen him play very well on about half a dozen occasions. That's obviously not enough but there's no reason to expect he won't be consistent for us this season provided he can stay fit.

I’ll be amazed (and disappointed) if Cousins is anywhere near the team come August 10th. The way it was announced tells you everything. Not even a current picture. I’d add him to the list of players that Monk has got, but he doesn’t want. How many we can move on remains to be seen.

Yeah, I got the same feeling from the way it was announced. I guess we'll see.
You could just as easily argue that not announcing the extension at all as with Dandrew and Morro is quite revealing of our intentions.

The club media team know exactly what the fans feel about players.
Had they made a massive announcement about his contract extension there'd be a lot of derision and maybe even anger over the socials. They knew they had to keep it low key.
But he was ever present under all managers last season when fit - so I do expect him to feature next season quite heavily.

Cousins was one of our better players when monk came in, so hoping he knows how to get the best out of him. Quite happy with this.

There’s a good L1 player in there somewhere, especially if he’s played with the right centre mid partner who does a different job and not get in Cousin’s way trying to duplicate what he does.
However, his lows were literally assisting the opposition score goals to many times for my liking. His highs though weren’t what the team required to win more games/score more goals etc and for that reason I feel his position in the midfield needed to be replaced by a more attack minded player. But he’s returning so he will get my support as if he’s a new signing by a new manager. I just don’t want to see him start alongside Digby unless there is literally no other option. When we’re well into the season and if its obvious he’s not in Monk’s plans I fear he may become a bit of a target for the boo boys if he makes the odd sub appearance here and there.

Not sure with this one - seems like it was an option triggered. Our midfield was a major weakness last season. Hope I eat my words.
Happy with the news on Kaikai today.

Maybe, although I think I'd go opposite and rather than keep it low key I'd throw my weight behind him. Maybe there's an interview to come.
It's not like U's fans to read too much into something - obviously - but we've referenced 'triggering a clause' since the retained list and it felt a little odd to me then too.
We'll see. He wouldn't be the first player to trigger such a clause and not really play much the following season - David Forde for example, Mark Roberts...was Omozusi one?
It all depends what we do from here for me. The midfield didn't really work last season but there are so many unknown with regards to formation, style of play and player signings that it's probably not really worth drawing many conclusions one way or the other until we do know...as I say above we didn't even formally announce Morro and Andrew extending their deals but those are just being treated as poor communication from the club rather than a dig at the player, when it could quite easily be considered a dig at the player.

If Cousins stays fit he'll likely be our stand-out player next season, so I am happy with this news. Our problem in the midfield is lacking any creative threat, the key signing will be Lankester's replacement, if we can get that right we should be fine. But it's hugely important that we do.

I think it’s clear we’re trying to shift Cousins.
Every renewal so far has had a picture with the new shirt, a quote from Monk and a video interview.
Cousins has none.
That’s not an accident.
We want rid.

The more I think about it, the more I feel a bit bad for Cousins, and actually think the lack of a proper announcement is a bit shitty from the club. Regardless of his performances last season, he had every right to take up the extra year on a contract the club helped to negotiate. It's also an appearance related trigger, which means Bonner, Corr, Harris and Monk all share responsiblity for helping to trigger it.

Yeah, feels like we've sold him under a bus a little and created a resin to doubt.
