OK, I was thinking... which other English club is most similar to CUFC? I guess I'm thinking in terms of club size, stadium, history etc: where else is the experience of being a Cambridge supporter most closely recreated? Obviously, I realise the real answer is that nowhere else compares, but anyway... any thoughts? Are we generally a fairly similar club to Exeter, for example?

I always think that Lincoln and Exeter feel like similar clubs but that might be just because we've played each other loads over the last 20 years or so

I've always thought of Exeter being fairly similar.
Colchester nah. Wycombe could almost fit the bill, a slightly more recent addition to the league, some cup runs and making it to the second tier. Shithole of a town and a bit of a soulless football experience also counts against though. Oxford, if the pension pots hadn't been raided for those higher highs would probably be in the conversation.
The elephant in the room here is probably that our most similar club in a lot of metrics are also our most hated club. Obviously there's a big divergence between the places, and the folk involved, amount of fingers the fans have etc but still.

There is a club that isn’t too far from our own that only joined the Football League a decade before we did and has, like us, spent much of that time bouncing around the bottom two divisions.
A lot less successful than us, spent far less time in the second tier and their fans are scum so they’re not that similar though (especially at the moment as they have some money behind them to live beyond their means in terms of their playing staff)

No way it’s Posh. They are a natural Championship club after all.😂

Since being friends with a Tranmere fan at university, I've always thought of them as being reasonably similar, though they have a "living in the shadow of Premier League neighbours" thing to deal with that we don't and a bit more historic success. He certainly had the right gallows humour to deal with the bad times, at least. Their recent non-League stint was only 3 years, luckily for them.
At his wedding, his best man produced a card for the happy couple signed by the whole Tranmere squad: "I can't help but think that if they spent a bit less time signing cards, and a little more time practicing, they might get somewhere..."

At a friends wedding back in 2006, the best man managed to get a letter written by Arsene Wenger congratulating the groom who is a massive Gooner on his wedding day.

Exeter feels right in terms of stadium (size + overall vibe) - they've been a football league side for longer, but we balance that out a bit with more time in the second tier.
Lincoln are a reasonable shout too. Wycombe and Colchester lose marks for stadium moves, but are probably quite similar to us in most other metrics. York City might have had a shout before dropping through the Conference and leaving Bootham Crescent.

Shrewsbury are another, thinking about it. Maybe a touch less of a REGIONAL POWER, but still retaining some of that side of it.
But they did also run with it and do the next iteration after we invented football back in the day.
Shite out of town stadium probably doesn't help the comparison, but still some likeness between us.

Another shout for Exeter. Similar sized stadium, with simarly misshapen stands. Although slightly jealous of their big bank stand. Both had periods in the wilderness, both flirted with relative success but both tend to bumble about the bottom two divisions.

I will chuck Orient into the mix too, like us they also spent time in division 2 and non-league.
