If that was anywhere close to the truth, god how badly do we need the redevelopment?

I will chuck Orient into the mix too, like us they also spent time in division 2 and non-league. Orient have very little identity. I lived near there, went to watch them often, and the most I could get was that they weren't West Ham! I couldn't think of a more different club, at a similar level, from Cambridge United!

Pretty sure the OP criteria was club size, history, stadium rather than local identity. Although I could argue that people in Cambridge used to watch Spurs, Arsenal etc back in the day too and had liffle affiliation for their local club.

Shrewsbury, Carlisle, Lincoln, Northampton are all fairly close matches, but Exeter are the most like for me... odd that all these clubs are in the same division for once.
I'd also offer up Port Vale, Gillingham, Scunthorpe, Southend, Orient, Tranmere and Walsall, although Scunthorpe and Southend are obviously in bad straits right now, and the other five are somewhat different in that they are small clubs in large conurbations, rather than being the only meaningful club in 'their' town.

Seriously though, if I were to pick 3 sides I'd go for Orient, Cobblers and Exeter.

I'd say Exeter yeah. Similar average attendance and capacity. Similar appreciation of the fans (they were top of the fan engagement survey, we were 4th*). We've played them more than any other club (is that still the case?) which suggests a similar league pattern and I think we both suffered financial issues at the same time, as well. The Manchester United draw and replay for both is a nice little touch too. * fanengagement.net/fan-engagement-index/Andrew

I would say most of their fanbase is in Essex. I thought the criterion was being most similar! I didn't realise it was just in certain ways.

Orient definitely tick a lot of boxes, but a lot they don't. Small club in the shadow of a huge club is a pretty big difference in vibe, even if I'd say they were similar in size.
