Which again was a big mistake from Bonner. Look what loan players can do for you and help you kick on to the next level. Yes some won't work out but it would be very short sighted to completely ignore that market where teams bigger than us always use it well to help them move forward. Jensen Weir, Hiram Boateng, Robbie Cundy, Hayden Coulson are examples of where they have come in and made a difference. A football club of our size and budget would be very foolish to ignore this market in the summer. You are of course absolutely right on this, we really must use the loan market properly. The trouble is that for every Hiram Boateng there will be a John-Kymani Gordon, and for every Gassan Ahadme a Lorent Tolaj - there will always be risk. It is very much about how reliant a club is on a loan market, a maximum of two to three season long loans feels about right, any more than that concerns me when we get to January and the potential for recalls.

Think it depends on the profile of player we sign on loan too. Generally the more experienced ones have been a success. The younger ones have been very hit and miss and I’m also never truly convinced they’d be better than what we’ve already got anyway. McConnell and Hoddle are more than capable of doing just as good a job as a young loan player.

Speaking of Weir, he's had a real mess of a season for various reasons & is out of contract in the summer I believe.

We started the season with 2 loan players, not usre that counts as "completely ignoring it" does it?
There's always a balance - when I go to Swindon games with a friend who supports them they all moan about over-reliance on loan players and how they can never build anything longer term because of it...

I was referring to the CM position. If we can't get a player in on a permanent who is good enough with the qualities required then we should explore the loan market.

I don't think we saw anything like the best of him. He looked like he had potential but was quite inconsistent, and then when it looked like he was really finding his feet & settling into the team he got injured and was out for the rest of the season.
Had a good time at Morecambe & then this season hasn't worked out between not playing enough at Blackpool and.. whatever's happened at Vale.
If he is available this summer he's the right type of profile of player we should be looking at in terms of age, potential, position and ability to impact the first team. But he'd also represent a bit of a gamble.

If Vale were to go down, I thought Chislett was their stand out player in the no10 role when we played them at home this season. Would definitely add some creativity in the middle of the park.
Looks to have decent stats for the year, but no idea of his contract terms.

He only signed in the summer so presume he'll be under contract for at least another season.
EDIT: Yeah, joined on a 2-year deal.

Really liked Weir, he looked like he had a bit of everything about him but also bags of room for improvement. I’d be excited to see him in a “Monk” side (Whatever that might be)
Also think Lankester will play a big part next season. Hasn’t been used in recent times but I think that’s more due to the situation than anything else. Again, another player who I look forward to seeing under GM. Big year ahead for him though, his time here would have to be seen as a disaster if he’s released at the end of next season.

I think this season has been above par (the good above par, not the golf above par) in the loan market. A massive hit for a season long loan player. A good bit of business for a short term loan for an experienced L1 pro for left back cover who has shown that he will be a big miss for tomorrows game. A miss for a raw Prem league kid who showed a glimpse of talent early on but never settled in 1 position and maybe ultimately had a few off pitch issues. And a bit jury’s still out on an experienced striker at all levels bar the Prem who might well score a couple more important goals to seal L1 football for next season.

He should really be a shoo-in for one of those #10 roles behind the striker, or even as the third in a midfield 3. Shame we've not seen much of him recently but I agree that I think that's more to do with the situation we've found ourselves in than anything else. Really is now or never for him next year though. We do have an unfortunate record recently of players not achieving much in their first or second year, and then having easily their best season for us in the one they're out of contract at the end of...

I think the point about the loan market is to try and find a player with some quality and potential that we can have for a year and be of benefit to us and them. Examples from the past being Ledson, Furlong, Maxwell & Cundy. We don't want a team full of loanees obviously but Gassan has proved his worth and we would all like him back next season. I would argue that we didnt start the season with JKG and that he was only signed as cover because Janneh & Kachunga got injured in August. He was therefore a bit of a gamble and who was available at the time.

We likely suffered a bit in loan dealings last summer over not knowing which league we were going to be in until the last day. A lot of those deals get lined up very late season/very early summer, particularly for the true "development" ones.

That doesn't really chime with what Bonner used to say, he maintained that loans were always the last deals to be sorted and often quite difficult, because clubs weren't always sure who to make available, I guess because they want to see how their younger players develop in the pre-season training schedule.
