I think the point about the loan market is to try and find a player with some quality and potential that we can have for a year and be of benefit to us and them. Examples from the past being Ledson, Furlong, Maxwell & Cundy. None of those were here for a year.

To actually bring the players in, yes, but the sounding out happens very early, particularly for those properly young players who *aren't* going to be around the first team.

Not sure he's quite ready for that level myself, not to excel at it anyway. I think it'd take a bit of getting to grips period. Much like this year actually, he ended last season and started this season struggling a little bit against the tip top wingers in the league but has improved his positioning and 1v1 defending hugely.
His ceiling is championship one day, but I hope he gives us another year.

Alas another year and he'd almost certainly go on a free. He's a great lad but let's be totally honest, it's absolutely not in his interests to sign a new deal with us & while I'd hope he may do so out of a sense of loyalty or gratitude I wouldn't expect him to and nor would I judge him for not either.

Sounds like his name just came up in a forum discussion about potential right backs, so no real threat there.

You are right EG and we would be foolish not to turn down a reasonable bid for him unless we can tie him down. Knibbs et al went for free's when maybe we should have taken the money on offer for them

Accept a good offer for him from a Championship or top League One club on condition that they loan him back to us for a year.

Hmm, yeah, I'd forgotton his contract. He's under 24 so he wouldn't go for free at the end of next season but I doubt we'd get as much for him at a tribunal as we could get right now.

Ah I thought he was a year older actually. That's something at least. But yeah, if he won't sign a new deal, this summer is the time we'd be able to get the highest fee for him.
Clubs don't tend to sign promising players in his position in January, especially not when they're out of contract 6 months later.

But yeah, the point is the same, to establish ourselves competitively at this level, we can't keep losing our assets for nothing. So cashing in this summer feels inevitable. Then we just pray BIG MAMS signs up.

It's not as though we haven't tried to use the loan market like that though, is it? I mean, even attempting to say that Bonner/Strang didn't want to use the loan market for first team picks ignores that we have had Gassan in the squad all season.
Could we have done more/better? We just simply don't know what the recruitment team aimed for and didn't get over the line. It doesn't mean to say they didn't try.
All we know for certain is what they achieved, which obviously has room for improvement, although some of that is only now with the benefit of hindsight. We shouldn't forget that last summer, when we signed Kachunga, Cousins and Kai Kai, we signed three players that, on the face of it, had good experience in the league and made us stronger. That it hasn't worked out as planned, isn't the same as being the right idea in principle.
