The laser on my PS3 died over the weekend, I'm now deciding whether to replace it with a PS3 or move on and get the Xbox.
I can't pick between the 2 - has anyone else moved from one to the other or got both and can make a recommendation? I generally play FIFA and CoD - I've got a pretty even split of mates online on each so that's not a deciding factor.
I reckon all the bits I've got for the PS3 I could sell and have enough for the Xbox, but if I was to get a new PS3 it will probably actually cost me slightly more because I wouldn't be selling any of the stuff I have.
Also has anyone been successful in getting an out of warranty PS3 fixed by Sony? If so how did they go about it?

I had been a devotee of Playstation until finances dictated that I had to get an Xbox 360 instead of a PS3. I have to say, thus far I've been hugely impressed. Really enjoyed all of the games I've played, without exception - and I'm not even on Live yet!
Mass Effect 2 was amazing, my first taste of COD was sublime, and I'm just getting started on GTAIV and Red Dead Redemption.
I go through phases of playing a fair bit, to times when I'm not remotely interested. I haven't got Live yet, I think that has to be next for me.

I had a 360 a few years back and replaced it with a PS3 Slim a year ago. To be honest there is sod all difference between the two, not really. I just prefer the PS3 due to it's Blu-ray player, iPlayer/ITV/4OD apps and the free online gaming aspect - I know the 360's online community is reportedly better, but I dont play that often so paying a subscription is not worth it for me. Plus I would have needed to pay for a wireless adaptor for the 360. PS3 is wireless out the box. I can also download movies and put them on the PS3 plus stream from my laptop too. It's all a matter of preference.

I've remained loyal to Sony since the PS1, and having played on both, the PS3 just about edges it for me.

I've had both, sometimes side-by-side. The PS3 never broke, so I can't help with getting it fixe don warrenty.
If the Blu-ray player is an issue for you, the PS3 may be the best option.
Game-wise, the majority of what I play is multi-platform. However I always seen games on one console or other that I want. If you're a huge fan of something Sony-specific (not that there are many these days), bear that in mind.
If online gaming is a big deal, what consoles do your friends use? Could be worth matching them to allow for some online play together.

Ive been loyal to playstation. I got my missus a xbox for xmas and theres no real difference apart from having to pay for the bits that are standard on ps3. I don't go online much but hear its better on xbox live. But then you get a free blu ray player with ps3. Basically its swings and roundabouts.

I used to have a playstation 3, and now have an xbox 360.
The functionality of chats, parties, etc between friends far exceeds the Playstation's equivalent area. Graphics are a TAD better on PS3, un-noticeable by me, tbh. The Xbox 360 is better value for money. After constantly slating the Xbox controller, I have now realised how much more comfortable to hold it is than the PS3 controller, which has a very 'flat' face, as apposed to the xbox controller which curves nicely.
Conclusion = Xbox 360 edges it, and at a lower price, you can't lose.

Welcome to the dark side Josh I always used to be a playstation type chap, But when it came down to ps3 v xbox I took a long hard look first. I bought at the time the ps3 was much more expensive but that wasn't the deciding factor. My friends were all having issues with the online play on ps3. They still do to this day, a lot of them have switched to xbox. And although you have to pay a yearly fee for online play the servers appear to be far better quality and less prone to lag and crash issues.

Got a ps3, constantly ask myself the same question, should I have got an xbox?
They're pretty much the same, ps3 (as already said) has v.slightly better graphics at present, but apparently if xbox games' graphics are to get better, a new console will need to be produced, whereas the current games do not push the ps3 system to it's full capability so ps3 could be better in the longer term if developers can actually realise the full potential of the console.
Having played both, and the fact that you don't have to pay for extras, I'm still in the ps3 camp, but should anything happen to my console.......who knows.
Out of interest how much do the extras on xbox like yearly internet cost?

£33 a year. But it varies... You save well over £33 on the price anyway. Oh, and modern-day 360's have built in wi-fi, better cooling systems and built-in Hard drives, so the Xbox Live is the only 'add on' needed...
As mentioned before, the service you get is generally considered better, and as a predominantly online gamer, it's well worth the cash - especially having saved more than that by not buying a ps3!!

£33 a year aint too bad, but then again if you have an xbox for 3 - 4 years you're looking at paying out £100 - 130, so are you really saving? Maybe to begin with, but suppose it depends on how you prefer to look at things really.
Was half tempted about 6 - 9 months ago to buy an xbox and have both until I could decide which I preferred, but seemed a bit pointless as would end up playing/buying the same games.
