Maybe he just 'gets' League 2.
Fair play to him but he will always be regarded by me as a awful manager who lost the players early and in his final few weeks proved he was a bit of a sponge as well.

They're very lucky to be winning at the moment.
The bubble will burst sooner or later........

The fact for me is that Ling didn't know the teams or players in our league and didn't attempt too. I remember him saying about our 1st opponents "I don't know much about them", I thought ok he has only been here a while, but this was something he said over and over again. If you don't know your opponent there is no way you can be prepared enough.
Compare that to Jez and his staff who go out there way to prepare and plan

Ling was an arrogant f wit. He produced the worst ever football seen at the Abbey imho.
His excuses, his language, just everything offends me about that man.
What was mentioned earlier, his weekly comments about "not knowing much about the opposition", just proved how arrogant he could be... He expected to turn up and win every week. His record for United is partially why our attendances are down, he is to blame for a huge amount of the financial shite he left us in... appointing a fitness coach, what a joke. We were totally outplayed against a part time Alfreton side at home.
I cant even bring myself to wish good luck to Torquay.

"A breath of fresh air" - A Torquay fan on another forum I've spoken to about Ling, how bad is their air?

It is surprising but you can't deny Turkey are doing pretty well at the moment. How many of the team are his imports (as well as Saah)?
He's had spells of success previously though but not been able to sustain them. If he gets promotion, which would surprise me further, I'd then have to agree that we didn't get the best out of him for some reason (which may be that said previously that he didn't get to know the conference well enough.)

I understand that you can only beat what is put in front of you but January seemed a little lucky/easy for Turkey - Northampton and Dagenham at home (scraped a 1-0 in both) Plymouth away and games at Morecambe and Macclesfield - fair play they won them all and well done but I think the games against Gillingham, Cheltenham and Shrewsbury to come across February will be a much bigger test of the Ling Dynasty.

He also has (on paper) quite a poor squad compared to a lot of sides in L2, and has just lost their best defender to Preston.
I fully expect it to go pear-shaped in due course, and normal Ling service will be resumed.

He basically walked into a similar position at Turkey as he did here, i.e. a decent squad that needed tweaking a little after belt tightening after a play-off tilt the year before.
The only real difference, in the main, is that at Turkey he was able to choose his own assistant, whereas Georgey Boy forced him to have Carden as his assistant.
Whether he just had better players at Turkey when he arrived, or he just got lucky remains to be seen. Their woeful run without a win earlier this season though says to me that he's no better there than here. It's just that they've managed to get on a run, with their confidence high, so his general ineptitude is being masked at present.
For me, you don't have to be a good manager to preside over a team on a good run. To be a good manager you have to be able to turn difficult spells around quickly and influence games when things haven't started well. I've seen no evidence to suggest he can perform the latter at all, in fact the exact opposite - he looks clueless as soon as things aren't going well, and ruts seem to last forever.

I'm no fan of Ling, but the turnaround at Torquay in recent months has been impressive - it's similar to the form he installed in the team during the run in in his first season with us. This, of course, came after an awful run of form which saw us flirting with relegation after Chester went pop.
Pressure does funny things to people, towards the end he wasn't a 'nice' man, and had no ideas or able to avert the slide. A lot of this was down to his 2IC and coaching staff set up, something which was never 'right' from the outset - if he's got that right at Torquay, then he does have the ability with that team behind him to be a sucsess - but it's still early days in reality and, as a formal manager of our club who ultimatly failed, I guess we all would quite like to see him fail at Torquay as we can write off his time here as all being down to him and his failings. In reality, it wasn't ALL his fault and at the right club, in the right circumstances, am sure he can once again be a sucsesfull manager.
