My recollection is that Ashbee came as a centre back initially, having played there for England schoolboys, and took a little time to find his best position, meaning he was a fringe player for a while - kind of like ROZMAC now. Went on to form part of the best midfield we've had that I can remember for quite some time. No-one supremely talented, but greater than the sum of it's parts.
Wanless was my favourite player during those times though. Nothing like the most talented, but just seemed like nothing would stop him from putting a tackle in or getting his head on the ball.

This is what he did time and time again with us: send us on an awful run, then salvage a good win or a short spurt of points to renew 'faith' in him, or at least to further fool those of us that (wrongly) believed in his ability.
Every time we hoped it would be the turning point; every time we were wrong. Net result: the damage done was deeper than anyone realised.

Martin Ling is getting some stick. This is completely wrong. He should be praised for being our greatest ever manager. [Please read on otherwise I will look stupid!]
1-He takes a great Photo. 2- His metaphor of artists and soldiers was amazing. 3-He is a link to the Swindon team managed by Glenn Hoddle who insulted us every week. 4-We achieved our best results when he was unavailable to attend the match. 5-He made good players look rubbish which meant other clubs were not sniffing around them. 6-He protected Luke Berry. 7-He always mentioned the fans in interviews. 8-I saved money whilst he was manager; vital for a credit crunch. 9-Furthermore, extra money for a wembley ticket did not need to be thought about. 10-Life isn't about how you fall but how you pick yourself up. Because of him, we have picked ourselves up with great strengh and determination.
I think I have out forward a good argument for Martin Ling to be considered our greatest ever manager.

I think his metaphor of Daryl Clare hitting the dancefloor in a nightclub was my favourite moment of his. Or this ![](http://i55.tinypic.com/1hxvzc.jpg)

3-He is a link to the Swindon team managed by Glenn Hoddle who insulted us every week. What was his connection with Swindon? (Still one of my most disliked teams; behind Peterborough but just infront of Stevenage.)

Ling is good at that producing a result when the chips are down - giving you renewed optimism he knows what he's doing, whether he can get them on a good run remains to be seen.

BUMP
So....what happens if he succeeds at Torquay after succeeding at Orient- But failed at us?
I know people are desperate for him to fail....see above posts for proof... but you can't deny he is having a successful spell at Turkey. Very perplexing after seeing some of his decisions here.
