It's like bald men arguing over a comb when you look at teh list of clowns we've had It's interesting to read that he wasn't at the ground enough, the same was said about Tilson at Lincoln. If you've been given a three-year deal, you should be moving to Cambridge - it just doesn't work with the commuting, not that Leytonstone is a million miles away. To add to the list of gripes about Ling; the stupid contracts he gave out where the second year option was down to the player. So if you do well you can clear off, if you do badly you get to stay at United. Utter madness. I hope he drowns in his own puss, and I imagine Turkey will be his last job as manager.

I don't think the 'at training ground' argument has any relevance to anything and is only used as an excuse. Fergie, for instance, never takes training and is only seen at the training ground in his office. Wenger is pretty similar and lets his coaches do much of the work.

Very true ^. I know absolutely nothing about Jez or Nolan. According to those win percentages Tommy Taylor was better than Roy Mac...I'm not sure I like that idea very much. Andrew Not surprising, Roy Mac's motto was why try to get an away win when a draw is adequate.

That's all well and good but Ferguson/Wenger have about 30 coaches dedicated to every single aspect of football from technical ability to fitness to physcology. Ling had Schofield & Carden!
I agree with Belly, the pathetic, humiliating loss to Mansfield in which the players literally gave up when the 3rd goal went in officially turned me in to a Ling out-er.

Willmott's goal in that game was astonishingly good, truly befitting of a Southern League player...

He used to play three up top regularly, home or away.

He used to play three up top regularly, home or away. And what a 3 they were. Oh for a Butler, Benjamin, Kyd or Shaggy front 3 now! Helps when you've got enforcers such as Preece, Ashbee and Wanless backing you up, thinking about it where on earth did Russell used to fit in all this?

Ashbee didn't play much if I remember correctly as we had quite a few holding midfielders. I remember wishing he played a bit more anyway.

lol ok so my memory is lacking a little. I may have been thinking of a short period when he was on the fringes.

I think Col means from 96-02 (he was at Derby 94-96). 200 games in 2-3 seasons would be a cracking effort, though!
204 games and 11 goals (so says wiki!).

Come on Col !! Ashbee didn't join till 1996 and was McFarlands first signing.
He certainly was a fringe'ish player in that first season or two but come our promotion year (98-99) and thereafter was central to the midfield Off the top of my head Wanless, Ashbee and Russell played together in the midfield most of that year with support from the likes of Mustoe & Preece.
