More fool them, but I just thank the Lord he did take the job at Torquay. ;D His going has enabled us to move on quicker than would have been the case. They may have stuffed us in the playoff final but it appears they are getting stuffed week in week out. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Ps. Wouldn't it be somewhat ironic if we went up this season while they went down.

On their message board a torquay fan wrote: "Good leaders do not engender good morale and improved performance by repeatedly criticising those they are trying to motivate. Ling's recourse is to blame, blame, blame. Well, he needs to perhaps be a little more reflective and ask himself what it is he has been doing wrong as a manager in this post and his last one. "
Familiar?

I'm just looking forward to Soccer AM next season when Max Rushden can gloat at the self-centred Helen Chamberlain and her mighty gulls, don't give a flying shite about the Mansellizer or Kev Nicholson both of them will be plying their trade down in BSP next season, let's see if she's as smug next season about her beloved Torquay. They took a couple of coach-loads to Wembley for their finest hour and yet they have the audacity to look down on us. As my mum always says "the sun shines on the righteous".

I still want to know how on earth he got the Torquay job in the first place? His time at United was woeful, he's up there with the worst United managers of all time. Why doesn't he just face facts and accept the Orient success was down to those around him and he is not cut out for this management lark! What do you mean up there with them??? He was the worst ever manager at United!!! For the turdid shite his team served up week after week and then his excuses upon excuses. For me Ling has to be the worst ever manager to have set through the door at Cambridge United!!! even the Ryan days for performances were never as bad as Thwingy's

The thing is Ling was backed here at boardroom level, they did everything he asked . He then went to Torquay and fed them bull about the board at Cambridge not backing him. Sponge.

I must agree with you, suffolkjez. Having started watching this club during the Ryan (then Shellito) era, it certainly wasn't the results that kept me coming back. Even in those difficult days, the performances were honest and the players driven to achieve. Somehow Ling managed to sap that sense of self-belief from the players, leading to heads dropping and insipid performances. Seems he's already done that at Torquay, as well.

you know I don't disagree about Ling being our worst ever manager - considering what he had to work with. But also it was how dreadful an experience coming to the Abbey became, thankfully a distant memory!!!!

I have to agree that the arrogant, fat little loser from east london is the worst manager we have ever had. Ryan was a joke and shelitto not much better (did sign david crown though) but Ling is by far and above the worst. turgid, passion less football under him that nearly sent us into oblivion. He should have never been allowed back after he resigned after 9 days. total loser who torquay are welcome too. Saah is not much better. i dont remember a queue of clubs waiting to take him back to the football league. what is it with him and loser ling? is he is son in law or special friend or something? Torquay are welcome to the pair of them!!

Harsh, Dan - only one club I'd ever wish Ling on, and that's the filth...! He was so indignant towards his time at United when he took the Torquay job, that I lost the few smalls crumbs of respect I had left for the man. Intimating we were a nut house, when the board gave him everything he wanted. Sure, we were a nuthouse when he first joined, but we had a settled board and a decent budget provided after his return and Rolls departure, it's just one excuse after another for him and makes me physically sick to think after the 'job' he did here, he left with his pockets lined and got another job in the league...
Pulled the wool over our eyes good and proper and doing the same there it seems - blaming everyone other than himself, apparantly the players aren't doing what he tells them to do..sounds familiar!

People seem to be forgetting that Jez said himself that he wanted to keep Saah but didn't have a choice due to him being so far over the new cap. And that he won one of our PotS awards last year.
Also, I do think we should be thankful to Ling for one thing: He did force Rolls out the club. Lord knows where we'd be now if he was still in charge.

Good point, and if it wasn't for Ling crippling the club financially and refusing to walk...demanding his pay off...we'd have never seen the Jezolution. Saah was out top earner, so makes me laugh the Torquay fans saying he had no money at them...clearly enough to sign a player on a decent whack here and a decent contract.

Ling was the worst utd manager ever. John Ryan was awful but was competing in a league where 3 of the current premiership top 4 were playing (Man City, Chelsea and Newcastle) and even had the audacity to defeat a Newcastle side containing Kevin Keegan, Chris Waddle, Terry Mcdermot, Peter Beardsley and Glenn Roedder. The lasting memory of LIng's reign is ignominious thrashings at football backwaters like Bath and Hayes etc. I know how the Torquay fans feel when they talk about his brand of football creates an air of apathy. In my 40yrs of supporting the u's the ling era ranks as one of the worst periods. For the tosser to then turn around and say he failed because he was too good for the job is beyond belief. LIng failed and this is according to both Steve Fallon and Jamie Murray (and i hope they don't mind me quoting them) was because Ling having been appointed couldn't be bothered about the job and was rarely at training and left everything to his staff. David Livermore was quite right to question Ling's utd's commitment and fitness after last years home derby. Whatever possessed Torquay to employ him I'll never know.
Thank god we now have a manager who inspires both the team and the fans. Viva la Jezolution!

What rubbish. Ling was clearly a failure at Cambridge and some of the performance, certainly embarasing, especially against part time teams but as for him being our worse manager, No.
The Ryan & Shellito times were both worst periods and neither of them showed much committment to the club. Was it not Ryan who got sent of in the first half of one match and left the ground before half time?
Lings main problem was he was looking to blame others when things went wrong and ignore all his own failings, and so was unable to learn from previous mistakes. Ling can be more easily comparable to Ian Atkins. Both were delusionable about thier own abilities, but at least they had some (slight) abilities.
Personally, I never stopped coming to matches during the Ling era but did during the Ryan fiasco.

I think thats definitely the case with the Shellito and Ryan eras.
