Is it reasonable to call people names to make your argument more forcefully?
Since this is a friendly forum, people are welcome to change their mind in this poll.

None of the answers really suit the response I'd like to give, which is that 'calling people names' sounds like a loaded term - as if it's definitely some form of abuse or bullying, when it can in fact be light-hearted, humorous or just 'banter'.
Outright abuse is never necessary on a forum and tends to undermine a point. A little bit of gentle barracking is to be expected, though for more sensitive types this may be interpreted in the wrong way.

The playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks.
Not what is going on. Playful may be the motivation, but it isn't a friendly tone and there is no exchange. We are all aware of the social sub-set that welcome the opportunity to cross swords and find it funny. If a small private society along such lines is what is intended maybe the link from the official site should be removed. A more general appeal to all walks of Cambridge United fan ('United in endeavour') would allow that insulting isn't seen as friendly to most people.
I'm guessing that you found the second option good enough to vote for, Russ? Perhaps the more sensitive types should be refused entry to the board - and the ground for that matter?
I suggest you start a 'Banter' sub-forum where the ground rules are clear and welcome.

Joking aside, I think you need to lighten up a bit.

Joking aside, I think you need to lighten up a bit. Is that some kind of racialist thing? Joking aside, it is easy for the mob to take things in good humour as they have the torches and are on the blunt end of the pitch forks. 'What's the matter can't you take a joke?' isn't going to cut it here.

Lurid - what are you getting at? Was it you on the old forum who lashed out at all and sundry after a couple of people pi$$ed you off? I innocently contributed to that thread and immediately had my motives and character brought into question, yet you could not bring yourself to apologise to those you had wrongly tarnished with the same brush as those people you had the real problem with.
Who has been bothering you on this forum? PM me if you have genuine concerns about unfair treatment.
EDIT: I didn't vote in the poll for the reasons I explained - none of the answers accurately reflected my thoughts on the question.

'What's the matter can't you take a joke?' isn't going to cut it here. Are you insinuating that I'm part of a mob then? I've never met anyone from here nor does anyone know who I am. My opinions are my own & formed purely and solely on the basis of reading your posts & your reactions to other's postings, and from that I've concluded that you seem to take things far too seriously, getting way too het up over meaningless, throwaway remarks.

Andrea used to say " attack the argument and not the person"
And in my opinion she was spot on.

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=flounceWhen a member of an online community announces they are leaving, usually after a protracted disagreement with other members of the community. Who left? Just speaking freely about my view of fair use of a community message board. If my arguments fly in the face of others views, please don't take it personally. I do hope that when axes have been ground and laughs rung out that some thought is put into a more welcoming forum for CUFC.

Who has been bothering you on this forum? PM me if you have genuine concerns about unfair treatment. EDIT: I didn't vote in the poll for the reasons I explained - none of the answers accurately reflected my thoughts on the question. By all means add an option in the poll (I can't edit it, as you know), but if it isn't about using abuse to empower an argument it will sit irrelevant to the original point. The options cover the range of views possible to the question well enough. It seems I have asked the wrong question for your taste. Rather than edit that too, why not start a new thread for your question? Could you back that accusation of character assassination up? How do you 'lash out' on a forum without being abusive exactly? If I was doubtful of your impartiality before, why would I have any faith in the result of a personnel PM to you? Interesting that you persist in viewing yourself as a tarnished innocent, but I beg to differ. Real problem? Make your mind up. I realise my difficulty in looking at any issue superficially makes me an easy target for criticism, but the argument I have put forward remains. Pretty much the same one as on the old board. For the same reason, only this time I was not the target of the abuse. So making it about me is just a distraction from the point. I didn't make it to score points, but because it needed to be said and I felt I had the words to say it. Freedom of speech is more about supporting a quietened voice than championing a shouter.
