We are encouraged to send emails - much as I hate it, it provides a trail and a record that the "discussion" actually took place.

We only have one computer at work so I can only e-mail myself. Don`t do it that often.

I started a new job in a massive open plan office that's spread over three floors a few weeks ago, we constantly have to email people on another floor, or someone two desks away. It makes no difference as the system logs every persons actions on a case from their computer. On occasion we might even have to transfer a call to the person at the next desk if they happen to speak the right language.

Open plan office! How do you get on with that? Only had to do it once so far, but found it very unnerving that you couldn't have a conversation (often of quite a sensitive nature) without the chance (actually high probability) of someone listening in. That and having "passing traffic" walking past my desk all the time made it quite an uncomfortable experience after previously working in a small office.

I would find it disconcerting to work in any other office environment, I think. Although it's sometimes an inconvenience to have nearby people possibly listening in on your conversations, that's outweighed by the fact an open-plan office is more sociable (even if we do email each other across the desk).
Having said that, there are some mornings where I'd like to come in and sneak into my own private office and put my feet up.

I think its what you are accustomed to - if you had never known it different from Open Plan, you would find a smaller office quite inhibiting and claustrophobic I could imagine. However, as you rightly identify, a small office to hide away in can be very handy sometimes. I've shut my door when I have been in on my own before now, and had no one bother me all morning!

Bus rant update.
I have now started dreaming about buses and am well on the way to developing an unhealthy obsession and paranoia.
But I do wonder, my previous rant was actually quite factual, and not quite as much a rant as it appeared. I've started studying the bastard things, their movements and analysing the distance between stops and the disruption they cause. I was going to post the other evening after following one the length of Cherry Hinton Road, the bloody thing stopped so many times, I almost flipped when it stopped at Cherry Hinton Hall, the fat arses with pushchairs got on and off, and then did the same a few yards later at the Perne Road Budgens. Is this the shortest distance between stops in Cambridge? Jesus Christ.
Anyway, I calmed down and got a grip. But, a little incident this morning tipped me over the edge and has left me considering therapy - or at least punching the Stagecoach guy, Andy Campbell or whatever his name is. That's my kind of therapy.
Washing up this morning, a wine glass split and I had a very nasty cut. It was instantly clear it was an A+E job requiring stitches etc. So, wrap a towel around and jump in the motor alongside the missus and head off quickly.
Yes, that's right. Stop start, stop start. For flip's sake. Even bloody worse at 8.30 am. Rush hour? Do me a favour. Queen Edith's way - my god how many stops are there along there? It was a farce, spotty teenagers and fat arses with pushchairs. To be fair the arses were not particularly fat this morning but that didn't seem to matter. Sodding buses just made A+E seem a long way off.
What a palaver. I have had enough. that really is all.

You should try driving down St Andrews Street by the Grand Arcade. You can get a full experience of the bus v bike v pedestrian battle there.
Taxi in the loading bay today. The loading bay is my domain and I didn't say anything to him after I'd squeezed in behind him. I did wonder what kind of bat rubbish crazy they might have gone if I'd dumped my truck in the taxi rank.
They are all driving round with " save the taxi rank" in the cab windows.
I say flip em!

I've just been partaking in free beers laid on by the firm at Cambridge city fc. Not sure if I should be feeling a touch dirty.
