Not too sure to be honest!
But, you know how it is with people. I was very fortunate in the sense of being there with someone that was up for anything and everything. I suppose New York could be draining if you or your partner was perhaps unfit, or wanted to waste time shopping in Macy's for example.
The insanity of New York was summed up on the day of the picture. From the Manhattan side of the bridge, we took a helicopter flight, then walked to Wall Street and saw a Newstand robbery complete with stabbing and arrests. From there to the 9/11 museum and memorial and back to Times Square and Broadway for a show. The good, the bad and the ugly in one fell swoop. Utter madness but loved it.
(Not sure about the pic, I think it corrects itself and enlarges when you tap it, it does on the iPad at least.).

Rome - surely lots of you have been there?
Hotel recommendations welcome. Location, as ever for city breaks, is key.
Any other tips or general thoughts also gratefully received.

Glad you've resurrected this thread! About to book a long weekend in Copenhagen. Similar recommendations for accommodation and things to do would be appreciated.

I've been to Copenhagen and was looked after by a local woman who took us around the city. I remember very little of it, though.
You'll know that alcohol is eye-wateringly expensive, I'm sure!

Rome - Difficult to say anything that hadn't been said a zillion times before.
Can only reiterate what the guidebooks say and recommend staying in the district of Trastevere. Convenient location, lovely restaurants, very pretty, romantic.
That is assuming it's with a loved one, and not piss-up with the boys, naturally.

Thanks. Yes it's with the wife, though we're partial to the odd drink.

I've been to Copenhagen and was looked after by a local woman. Guess that time wasn't with the wife.

Haha. I was wife-less at the time and the local lass didn't look after me in that way, though I would have let her.

Rome flights and hotel booked. No messing.
Now, who has been to Slovakia (specifically the High Tatras) and/or Bulgaria (specifically Rila National Park).

I've been to the Polish side, staying at Zakopane. In any case it looks like Bulgaria, and Borovets, is the choice. Has anyone spent any time in Sofia? Going for five nights in total, assessing whether it's best to split it 3-2 or 4-1 in terms of nights in Borovets and nights in Sofia.

Has anyone used Airbnb? Seems too good to be true, one of those I feel like there has to be something wrong! Made my first booking with it for Copenhagen, beautiful apartment with great reviews in an amazing location. Cheaper than any hotel I looked at.

Everyone's talking about it, seems to generally be positively too. I was struggling to find a hotel close to the Olympic Stadium for the big London 100 mile bike ride recently. All hotels were either fully booked or charging an astronomical premium for the event, so decided to give AirBnB a bash. The missus and I found a nice little place 5 mins from the Stadium. It was just a little ground floor ex-council flat that two sisters had bought and were renovating, but it was lovely, clean, tastefully done and they were really friendly people exactly like the reviews infact. I suppose that's what AirBnB is supposed to be about and it felt good giving the couple a few quid and helping them on their way too. I've heard that some people are really using AirBnB as a business model and some of the places are becoming quite expensive, but in my (limited) experience, I'd say it's great - and wouldn't hesitate to use it again, home or abroad.

Presently in Bled,Slovenia with airbnb. We've used it for a couple of years and haven't had a bad experience yet. The two scenarios we've had are 1) an apartment to ourselves - plusses are you get to do what you want when you want. No interference, generally living alongside locals. These can be a money making exercise or 2) living with a local family plusses being you get a bit of brekkie and ideas on what to do / where to go. Generally these have been really cool people eager to meet travellers (and make a bit of spare dosh). No problems so far!

Kyrgyzstan - I've developed a fascination with it and am really keen to go. Anyone been? Seems one of the 'easier' destinations in central Asia as no visa is required. Looks stunning, too.
