Bit of a strange 'has anyone been' but will ask anyway:
To an Opera?
Not hugely into The Arts myself, but do try and appreciate these things from time to time. Always try to pick a nice venue which adds to the sense of occasion, which really helps the concentration if the subject is heavy going. Quite nice to push the boat out occasionally and the good lady gets to feel special too.
To that end, it looks like dinner and 'Il Travotore' at The Royal Opera House.
No idea what to expect really, but hoping it won't be a case of falling asleep during the performance and dashing back for a quick jar at The Empress on the way home.
Anyone been, to the ROH or an Opera in general?

23 mates of mine were just in Iceland. Lovely place and people, but apparently they'll take you to the cleaners and send you home with your tail between your legs if you don't turn up on the day.

Can highly recommend Kyrgyzstan. Just steer clear of the police if you can, and if you can't then 300 som (about £3.40) should get them off your case.
It's a stunningly beautiful country, even if its towns are not much to write home about.
I'm sure it'll become an increasingly popular tourist destination over the next decade.

It's commonplace for the police to pull you over while driving (we had a hire car), or even while walking along the street, in a bid to extort a few Kyrgyz som to top up their salary.
Fortunately it happened only twice. The first time we bartered down from 2000 som to 300, and the second - when I was alone wandering the streets of Bishkek - I managed to walk away without stumping up my passport, which you're legally required to carry at all times, or any cash.
Aside from that and some taxi scams, we had very little trouble and were on other occasions greeted with wonderful hospitality, including free lifts and free food.
I'm definitely ready to go home now, though!

Just trying to slip in a couple of quick holidays either side of the school holidays, so Bulgaria 2nd week f September?
For some reason never visited Eastern Europe in the past and would like to go down that route. Absolutely loved Montenegro last year and would like to check out Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia etc. A google search has thrown up a Bulgarian holiday catching the eye - Bansko. I’m assuming it’s primarily a winter ski resort but at that time of year should be ideal for hiking, mountain biking, lake swimming etc. Does sound fantastic. All the tripadvisor stuff relates to winter and skiing so would be interested to hear about (late) summer or just views on Bulgaria in general?
Have booked Umbria/Perugia for July and there’s a reasonable amount of trip advisor info there, but would be good to hear of personal views and experiences there too.

I've been to a ski resort in Bulgaria, Samakov. For a Ski resort it is disgustingly cheap, 80p a beer and 40p a shot. Food costs about 3 quid for a banging meal, I've been told the rest of Bulgaria is even cheaper

I haven't been to Bulgaria but I am very fond of Yugoslavia. I lived in Monte for a couple of years and traveled a good bit around the area. I think Belgrade us great, a worthwhile city break type place, small enough to get around easily, not too busy, nice parks, beer, river, etc. I'd still like to explore some if the smaller towns around there, though, Nis, Novi Sad, odds and ends of Bosnia.

I went to Borovets in Bulgaria. It's a ski resort but I went in June. It was beautiful. Or, moreover, the surrounding area was.

Bulgaria seems to have been given the thumbs up by you guys so no point faffing about, all boooked. Checking out a quick 3 night autumn city break next.
Right then, I’m off to buy a microphone. With a carbon footprint like that I should be due a spot on stage alongside Emma at the next extinction rebellion gig.
