I was there in the first few weeks my steak burger wasn't so fantastic but then I had a lamb burger with the yorkshire pudding buns and they were amazing.
Tickell arms is a bit of a poncey pub I used to live in whittlesford and it's full of middle class snobs eating over priced food, Much rather some standard pub grub down the plough in Duxford

The pub in Thriplow is also very good, now free of the group that have the Hole In The Wall I think.
We did Tickell Arms for a big 3 man birthday weekend that was also Mothers Day, so they coped really well with our big family group (14 of us) Price wasn't an issue but I guess you get what you pay for.
Many years ago we used to use the John Barleycorn in Duxford for Sunday roast then quiz night. Not sure what it is like now

They said it had to be well done as they were not allowed to have pink meat in the middle. Fair enough but my sister's dry burger was a veggie-burger I hope they have got their early teething issues sorted. A lovely couple who deserve to do well

July 9 to be exact.
It looks good and the menu sounds good, but the burgers disappointed me.
The puddings were good though.

Thanks for the recommendations, finally got something booked for Saturday.
Was getting a little frustrated to be honest - Piccolo Il Mondo-fully booked, Restaurant 22-fully booked, Cotto-fully booked, Hole in the Wall-not answering the telephone... no sign of difficult trading conditions in Cambridge it seems.
Anyway, the goalposts have moved a little and we've now got some time restrictions for Saturday, so it's a case of just trying somewhere new and pushing the boat out will have to wait for another day.
So, it's off to De Luca. Fingers crossed, we shall see.

And I was head over heels in love with his older sister when I was 11.

Well at the same time you wrote that, I was at a new bar/restaurant opening night in Ilford, enjoying a curry on them! You're right to ask!

We liked De Lucas too. The Mrs enjoyed the cocktail list just as much as the food

I find myself getting more and more un-impressed with the Cambridge restaurant scene, particularly as I spend time abroad. This week I've found myself in Krakow, an incredible city, where, like in Cambridge they are flooded with tourists, and business conferences which is why I am here. Almost every restaurant is independent, and good. Better still (take note LAZY restaurateurs in the UK) every single place I've seen here has at least one draft beer available. Even the Michelin guide places such as the stunning one I ate in last night for about £20 a head for three courses and lots of drinks.
We get it so wrong. Even reasonable places such as De Luca can't be bothered to offer draft. Something we can't get at home. I now boycott places as much for their bar list as anything else as I object to paying £4 for a thimble sized bottle of warm lager, normally served in a warm cocktail tumbler. Yuk.

A lot of it will come down purely to profit Jerry
Using round numbers, for a premium lager they will be looking at, at least £1 pint cost. Most Brits start complaining at £4 a pint for draught beer. So that's £2.50 per pint profit after the VAT man is paid for a pint from a pump.
Now take bottled beers which people for some reason are happier to pay £3 or £4 a bottle for.
If we took Becks for example, loads of supermarkets or suppliers selling that brand at about £13 for 24 bottles. That's 54p for a bottle that is just shy of half a pint. Similar cost price per pint but even if they charges £3 a bottle, roughly speaking that's £6 a pint. KERCHING££££!!!!! Nobody would pay £6 a pint Even at £2.50 a bottle, people would moan and not pay the equivalent £5 a pint for draught
Bottles are also waste free (no line cleaning) and product quality is assured if they don't clean lines properly
It doesn't seem right, and why people are so happy to pay such a premium for bottles I don't know! Even in pubs, people moan at a pint of Fosters going up 10p when the landlord has his annual increase, but then they drink bottles later in the night and have an overpriced bag of pork scratchings!
It does remind me of a conversation I had on here a few years ago with a student who was bemoaning his Student Union putting up a bottle of Bud 20p to £2.80. Well, on Bud, that is the equivalent of £4.80 a pint. If you're an impoverished student, drink pints of draught then!!!!! £2.00 in the union v £4.80 because you think you're being cool drinking bottles of Bud! Baffles me!
Suppose this then opens the whole discussion of Pint Shop being able to charge £4+ for half a pint of some of their fantastic regional craft beers..........

The carpenters arms in great wilbraham is one i'd recommend, excellent food at decent prices, the owners moved over from France so it's fairly French orientated but it's honestly excellent food, better than midsummer house id say which I found was a total let down, also the beer in the carpenters is top notch, if you like ales that is.
As others have mentioned the galleria is still the one to beat, been many times and not once has it been shabby. Margarita is nice but I find there a bit tight on the portion size and I always come out of their still hungry.
Brewhouse is decent for pub grub as is the haymakers.
Off to the backstreet bistro in 6wks so will report on the findings then.
