Poor Kev! Bob could certainly get feisty at times. I remember one particular occasion when the two South African lads were working behind the bar (must be eight or nine years ago) when Bob came in to see some well, lets say, undesirable types trying to purchase beer. For a small fellow he had one hell of a temper on him, and both ran to say the least. I vaguely recall the aftermath conversation with the bar staff which was along the lines of not allowing the great urban peasantry to enter the establishment if at all possible, but in slightly more colourful language!

The new @smokeworks is FANTASTIC. Ribs, pulled pork, pulled beef. Delicious stuff. Same people that own the Chop House chain (Cambs Cuisine)
It's down an alleyway opposite the Eagle down the side of the church.
Great system. You can't book but If you get there and there is no table, they take your number, put it on their ipad and text you. You can then nip to the Eagle or Pint Shop for a beer and either wait for your text to say your table is ready or click the link on a text they send you and it tells you where you are in the queue and approx how long.
The service is quick, enthusiastic and the whole experience is brilliant. I had a pulled beef burger which was ace, adding some delcious Sweet Hot Beaver mustard to finish it off.
A must visit, and i'll be back there very soon!

Smokeworks is on the site of the old Eraina Tavern which had been in business for generations, so mixed feelings as sorry to see the Eraina go. That said, Cambs Cuisine is an excellent operator, and has a growing portfolio of great restaurants, so the building is in very good hands.
In intrigued at the prospect of Beaver Mustard. Did things itch a bit afterwards?

Went to Bill's down Green St the other day. Was very pleasantly surprised. They pull off the brand and food with some aplomb.

Thought I'd pull this thread up again to see if anyone's got any recent experiences?
Heading out this coming Saturday and have decided to push the boat out a bit as there are a couple of excuses for a celebration. Would like to go somewhere nice as it's a bit of a one-off - tried get into 'il piccolo mondo in Bottisham' for example but the place is still booked 4 weeks in advance. Toying with 'The Hole in the wall' among others.
Anyone got any thoughts or experiences?
Edit:
Bugger, going to clash with the rugby. Oh well, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

We had an excellent meal at Three Horseshoes at Madingley the other week. Food, service, the lot. Well worth the money. Up there with Hole in the Wall I'd say
Restaurant 22 on Chesterton Road always worthy of a celebration meal to treat yourselves
Also tried Sirens opposite Jamie's Italian the other week. Only had a quick main course rushing before the theatre, but it was good. However, wasn't very busy and too many waiters coming ober asking the same things, trying to upsell etc

In nine months of trading I have never seen anyone in there. Had a pleasing Sunday Lunch at the Chequers in Orwell yesterday. Bit too far from town for my liking though.

22 Chesterton Rd is excellent. The proprietor is also a U's fan! I think it is as good as the Michelin-starred restaurants (Alimentum and Midsummer House).

Cotto on East Road is fantastic. Like 22 it's Michelin star esquire food and fantastic unobtrusive service. The taster menu at the new ish Indian navadhanya on Newmarket Road is good.

Having had a chat with a pest control chap the other week I will not be eating Chinese in Cambridge. Edit...I'm told it all tastes like chicken.

Piccolo mondo is good, service was excellent. The waiting list I am surprised at. It is similar to Deluca's style on regent street. Delucas has the edge for me but that is a biased opinion. The Hole in the Wall, however is a couple of steps up and I thoroughly recommend. Went for a friends birthday not too long ago and had an amazing meal. Chose the wine flight also and it added to the experience brilliantly. Can still taste the flavour explosion from the first course! Unforgettable, perhaps enhanced by the surprise wow factor and that I wasn't expecting it to be so good, but it was. The chef came out to chat at the table and I recognised him from Master Chef somehow. I think he was a previous winner and did some judging more recently. Definitely worth the wait list for the reservation here though.

Went to smokeworks for the first time, cheap for what you get and it's bloody lovely Also new restaurant out in the area Cambridge Canteen in Whittlesford (confusing name) proper gourmet burgers really nice play not very good at marketing themselves because nobody knows its there www.cambridgecanteen.com/

When we went to Cambridge Canteen, it was really disappointing. All of our burgers were dry and not that tasty. We gave them feedback as it was only their first few weeks and we think they deserved and welcomed the chat, to help get things right. Everyone wants to see a new independent do well, so fair play to them. Complimentary coffees were given as a goodwill gesture.
I wouldn't rush back there myself, but I wouldn't advise against people trying it
A great use of the old Ciba Geigy canteen! Changed since the geography field trip from school in the early 90's!
Speaking of that way, the Tickell Arms at Whittlesford was very good.
