Went back to the Pint Shop for Sunday lunch & wasn't disappointed.
2 Courses for £17 and enough quantity to avoid "kebab on the way home syndrome".
More great beers , potted pork , lovely bit of lamb, yum!!
they do however & they are not alone fugg me right off with the "supplement for cheese course"!!!
If anything I should be charged less. all you're doing (insert name of establishment) is slicing a bit of cheese. Why charge me up to £7 more for the less prep than you would have to do for any other desert?
Baffling
Sorry Pint Shop - You are good!!

Pint shop was ace kept forgetting to come back here and post about it.
Food was top notch. Steak the wife had was amazing and the roast beef I had was the best roast I've had in a restaurant. We got a good discount as it was opening week when I went but tempted to go back for more.

Went to Alimentum for the first time yeaterday. The food and experience was great, as you would expect from a michelin star gaff, but for me, Midsummer and Restaurant 22 are better.
Saturday sees me venture into Cambridge Brew House for lunch amd Pint Shop for dinner for the missus birthday.... Love trying new places!

Polonia on Chesterton Road deserves a mention in this thread - ridiculously cheap yet delicious Polish food, plus a wide range of head-ache-inducing beers and vodkas. What could be better.

Just a quick heads-up about the (relatively) unknown, coolest spot in Cambridge - The Roof Terrace, The Varsity Hotel and Spa, Thompson's Lane. What a place this is. Had been to dinner at the Galleria and overheard people talking about the place, so decided to find out for ourselves and head there for a drink of two afterwards. Well, well, well, just a perfect spot on a balmy summers evening. Can't comment on the food obviously (they do a rooftop barbecue apparently), but it's all about the ambience and on a perfect evening it's about as good as it gets. Needless to say you'll need a second mortgage to visit (a red wine and small bottle of Peroni was almost 15 quid), but you do feel it's something special. Those prices alone keep any undesirables away, and in any case the concierge in the foyer keeps an eye on things. Recommendation:- Take the cheapskate option and on a beautiful summer's evening head up there for a post-dinner drink with the loved one. Failing that, you could always take the missus.

I hate to say but some Cambridge restaurants and bars are getting ludicrously pricey. A couple of months ago Mrs Jerry1971 and I found ourselves in the Garden House bar (now something to do with Marco Pierre White) and a pint of Becks Vier and a warm glass of Prosecco (yuk) was £15.00. Served with a grimace too.
For me, for 'above pub level' drinkies, All Bar One and Browns take a lot of beating, both excellent bars and reasonable pricing too.
Jury is out for me on the Roof Terrace and also the River Steak House which all forms part of the Varsity Hotel. I always think that bars which cannot be arsed to serve at least one premium quality lager on draft are a bit sad. They would argue that draft is for the pub - but many high level establishments around Europe are only too happy to serve a good cold glass of draft beer to their customers. It seems that in the UK we are too lazy to get that right. I object vehemently to paying silly money for a small bottle (thimble sized normally) of warm beer that I can buy in the supermarket for a quid. As a result I tend to ignore the 'up their own backside' establishments such as the Roof Terrace, Bistro du Vin bar and the worst offender, Jamies so-called Italian, who cannot be bothered to do draft. It is plain lazy profiteering.

What fugs me off is the inability for a restaurant to have even one bottled Ale. How difficult would that be.
Another shocker at Hotel Du Vin this weekend. stupidly gave them another chance but usual clueless staff with naff all knowledge of food or the drinks that they serve or how to prepare it. They have the cheek to charge more than Alimentum.
I do love the Roof Terrace for the views but the last time I went spent over a oner on two steak sandwiches, couple of VAT's, glass of fizz & 4 small bottles of London Pride.
Hole in the Wall keeps coming up trumps with good grub, but it's taxi distance & adds a few quid to the night.
Cambridge lacks an occasion place to eat that has a good vibe, you can dress up to go to & serves good food.
On the plus side I had a night out around Mill Rd on Friday, Blue, Kingston, Empress. 9 Pints for less than £30 that is good value & no fizzy "brewed in Northampton/Luton" continental Lager in sight.

Animal - I had a lucky escape! Nearly went to BdV on Saturday as I thought it was about time to give them another chance too - glad I didn't. Alimentum was superb last time I went there, and much better value than BdV as you say. Well over a one-er, but worth every penny for a decent Michelin starred experience. Probably my choice for a smart evening out in Cambridge at the moment.
You are of course sadly right about smart places to eat - we are sadly lacking. I do like Cau, La Margherita (still brilliant after 24 years) and some others too, but nothing stands out as being that little bit special. We're off to the Oak Bistro on Saturday night, for which we've heard many good things, and it will be the first time there since Bob left the Lawyers (which I loved!), so we'll see. Black mark already for no draft!

Give the Oak a try but I thought it was a bit like having my tea (nothing special). It was about 2 years ago.
I don't know if you knew but Bob sadly passed away a couple of years ago.

I didn't know that Animal - a great shame. Indeed, the bloke was a legend. I had my 30th there (many) Many years ago. Bob did a BBQ brilliantly & in the post do mayhem gave Kev Robson a proper punch square in the chops. Still no idea why? Many post racing coach trip lock ins as well.
