I had a great night in the Cambridge brew house on Tuesday. They put on a 6course taster meal with beer matched to each course, the twist being each course had an element of pork scratching in it. The evening was compared by their head brewer with food introduced by the chef and guest speaker was the man behind a new artisan pork scratching brand, spoke about his love of pigs, farming brewing beer and scratching making and some pig related poetry. A completely eccentric but highly entertaining guy who upon googling turns out to under secretary for DEFRA and a peer in house of lords. All that for just £25/head, we were sat at a table with the brew house owners and they plan to do a range of these theme nights so keep an eye out.

A few years ago for a friend's birthday. The set menu was lovely and very good value.

Been doing a bit of work for The Pint Shop they have big ambitions, that area of Cambridge will be fully loaded with eateries soon. Tell us more! Hopefully there will be a draft lager offering and not just real ale? I always think that is one of the places where the chophouse went slightly wrong. Hint: Amstel would be good!

Haven't been to Efes since a friend of mine had a run-in with one of their waiters who was being a berk (the waiter that is, not my friend). Nice food though.
As others have said, would recommend The Punter, awesome food and good beer. The Chop Houses and Old Spring are also good suggestions, though I think the Chop Houses are quite expensive these days.
One out of town place that's worth a visit is The Crown and Punch Bowl in Horningsea, their menu is great.
Oh yeah, and we had a nice meal in The Clarendon Arms recently, worth a look if you're after decent pub food.

Apparently first new pub in Cambridge for 14 years {how many have closed in that time?]if you call The Regal a Pub, think there might be a lot of real ale, not that big inside, 3 floors though, small garden at rear

The new Brew House is great. Decent in-house ales and hey, they sell Innis & Gunn. Really tasty burgers, too, and if they mess anything up they're more than happy to sort things out and then some.
I've never had a good experience at D'Arry's though. The first time I got food poisoning, and the second time the food was stone cold and the glass was dirty. My friends went a few months back and had the same problem, asked for them to give them a warm food and they "forgot" and got very aggressive when they went to leave.
If you find any good places round Whittlesford area, let me know. I moved into Sawston over a year ago and I've still only been to one pub once!
(Also, for a little café deal, the girls at Sweet Tea on Sawston high street are great)

Seeing as I started this thread I thought I best report back on my findings.
I went to D'arrys and I thought it was pretty good. Got seated reasonably quickly and the staff were quite attentive. We did however endure a long wait for any food to arrive. When it did it was pretty good. My burger was the highlight but starter was just OK it was a few weeks ago and I can't even remember what it was so it can't have been that good. Cost was decent and we enjoyed it as a night out but possibly not racing back to try it again in a hurry. Especially as we want to try a few more places.
Spent most of the night explaining to the wife that it used to be the dingy pub you went to when you got ID'd everywhere else and ended up bumping into everyone else that had endured the same. Changed a bit now :-)

Agree about Brewhouse - great pub and very good food. Service excellent.
If you want a posher meal, Restaurant 22 is excellent. Very small and friendly, beautiful food.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Can't wait to check out a few of these places. I've moved to whittlesford so got the tickell arms (owned by chophouse I believe) in walking distance so looking forward to checking that out too. Did visit the hole in the wall a few years back and it was excellent. The Chequers in pampisford and The george in babraham are also well worth a visit in that area
