Name and shame, your worst Cambridge pub experiences too?
Ancient Mariner. Went in one lunchtime for a pint and a bite to eat. Everyone stopped to look around at us and there was nothing vegetarian on the blackboard. Like something out of the film Deliverence. A Local Pub with very strict bounderies.
Larger and cider were the only pint options.

Two quickies spring to mind:- The landlord in The (old) Issac Newton refusing to serve me (or anyone else) lager. Resplendent in my mullet I stood firm and insisted. He reluctantly poured, informing me the lager tap was connected to the urinal. Also, remembering a night me, a mate and our squeezes went to The Tickell Arms at Whiitlesford which was run by an eccentric guy (can't remember his name at the minute):- Me: "Good evening, I'd like a pint of lager, a pint of bitter, and two glasses of medium white wine please". Him: (Pointing) "You have got an earring" (at me), "And you haven't got a tie on" (at my mate), "Now piss off" (at all of us).

One of the worst experiences I've had was at aforementioned Cambridge Blue, as much as I love the place for a drink I won't be eating there again any time soon. Last time I did, my food was brought over to me but seconds later it was whisked away, and it was explained that it been taken to the wrong table, and mine would be coming shortly. What happened next was an absolute farce, as the waiter then took the plate to another table, who informed him they hadn't ordered it and it was then taken back to the kitchen before being walked around almost every table in the pub with no takers before vanishing to the kitchen again. Whilst I was at the bar complaining, one of my mates came over to let me know that the waiter had appeared at our table again, leaving the same plate of now cold, dry, food and had the cheek to claim it had been freshly re-made. Eventually I had my money back and went somewhere else.

Just before it closed, The Angel PH in Ely was an utter dive. I can never forget the white bread sandwiches under a clear plastic cover on the bar that were curled up at the edges...probably were buttered in about 1967.

The worst pub I've been to in Cambridge is the Salisbury Arms. For the following reasons:
1. It is a Charles Wells pub, vile. 2. The staff were rude and would not serve me a beer that wasn't off. The pint tasted terrible and stunk of vinegar. Both clear signs that the beer was off. Anywhere else would have changed it. In the end I left. 3. The interior isn't that nice.

Of the tied houses Charles Wells are one of the best of a bad bunch. Interestingly when was your experience of the bad pint?

Reckon my ol' man has The Angel sign somewhere.
I visited the Blue Moon, the Clarendon Arms and the Flying Pig for the first time recently, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I've been meaning to visit the Geldart on my to or from the abbey, I've heard good things. I usually head to the Earl for a pre match pint and to watch the early kick off.

Used to love The Hopbine circa 1977-79. My old man was the landlord. Great skittles table.
Though not as good as The Earl Of Derby.
Merv the swerve any one?

That would have been either the new landlords or the new 'stand ins' then. Prior to that they had a good team in there led by Andy and Rosie who knew their job well...... but left due to the antics of Charles Wells!

The Ship always reminds me of 'The Jockey' in Shameless. Everyone should try bingo and karaoke at The Ship. It’s an, er, experience. Worst pub we’ve been to in recent years was in the Free Press – terrible, cold, food and terrible attitude from the staff when this was pointed out. Won’t be going back there in a hurry. Disappointing lack of mentions in this thread for The Champion, and it’s less old-man-ny little brother, The Clarendon Arms. The Clarendon is one of my favourites at the moment. Also retain a fondness for The Green Dragon, even though it’s gone downhill in the last few years.

Devonshire Arms, Beaconsfield, Kingston and Live and Let Live for good pubs. Red Lion in Cherry Hinton and White Swan on Mill Road for the worst.

Not been in the Green Dragon for years, since they took the choice of Bangers and Mash away in favour of a bog standard Greene King menu
