Off on hols shortly. Better get a couple of books. Any recommendations? Love stuff like le Carre, Dickens and Orwell but don't read nearly enough novels these days.

I would always recommend Graham Greene, read The Man Within this summer. The Power and the Glory I like best, religion and big themes but not too overwhelming for beach reading. Julian Barnes, too, read Flaubert's Parrot but wouldn't be for everyone, maybe Talking it Over would be a good bet.

I'm partway through Ursula K Le Guin's Earthsea Quartet, and even as a huge fantasy fan it has utterly blown me away. I feel like it's a must read for everyone.
Another must read is The Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. That is on most must-read lists, but it's there for a reason. A real thriller on civil war era Spanish streets. Honour is also a fantastic read, significantly shorter than the other two. It bounces around a bit between times and places, but the characters are so utterly human, and it deals with clashing cultures in a really personal way.

I'd second Shadow of the Wind. If you want a wartime spy thriller, Alan Furst's Night Soldiers series is great. If you want to piss yourself laughing, try A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz.
