A pair of football boots from the first FIFA world cup final (Uruguay Vs Argentina) are on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in the Paris 2024 exhibit.
I'd post a picture, but we don't have the data on here for that.
Studs on the forefoot, bars on the heel/back foot.

That’s a pretty amazing list of stats! Go on, who is going to do the league listing for our results? Would be quite an interesting project for somebody with time on their hands. I’m far too busy, got the washing up to do! Well as a starter, there is a rather good book out there with the 1970 onwards FL details. www.amazon.co.uk/Cambridge-United-Complete-Football-Histories/dp/1874287325A fine read (Some of the seasons more so than others, naturally!)

Andy Mangan of Conference Wrexham fame heading to Real Madrid. Yes really. Sadly, it seems his fame wasn't enough for the Spanish authorities and he's been DENIED a work permit. Breakfast means breakfast after all.

To be fair, Land of my Fathers is a corker. Up there with Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika, the Russian one, the Italian and the underrated gem that is New Zealand’s. The Russian anthem rocks I always remember it not from sport but from the submarine crew in The Hunt for Red October

Does that mean football is actually better than society as a whole?
How depressing.

Because some of it is banter that all sides do, the clip of her saying "you wouldn't say no though would you"... all types say that, gay men/women as well as straight men/women.

Was going to post this on the Dunk page but applies much wider... why do players retire so early?
Yes, while it looks a glamorous life (and it is), players do work/train hard and all those games takes its toll, time away from family, high pressure etc... there is still that fact that like us, they love football and love playing.
Players like Kroos - stopped playing after Euros and CL final. Even in 5 years he would smash L1 level. Or the god himself Dunk, Could still smash it at L2 and certainly non league. There will be many many others but it seems they have so much more to give!

I guess for some it's a case of retiring on a high and at the peak of their popularity, or listening to what their body is telling them and calling it quits before it becomes a long term issue.
Dunk could almost certainly probably have drifted down the leagues but he was picking up a few injuries, retires a legend, and leaves into a very exciting career outside of football, I think it was a sensible decision.
No idea about Kroos, but I'd suggest that for every player we think retires too early there are other greats on the world stage like Modric, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic and Hoolahan who have/had great longevity.

I think for Dunk, it was a combination of the injuries he has suffered, including the 'career ending' one he had last season, combined with his planning for his life after playing and the opportunity that arose, that made his mind up.
I wonder if his boots are hung up for good, or whether he could be tempted to play at non-league level for a part time club? There is a saying out there about players being a long time in retirement!

Injuries and the toll of playing add up.
Whenever you read an autobiography of a player or whatnot, it always gets to the point of "I played a match, then spent three days icing my body, aching and struggling to sleep, hoping I don't step back on the pitch and then have to spend another 6 months doing physio if I tread on the grass a bit funny".
The playing football bit is grand, but when you have to put so much in to be not as good or sharp as you once were, it makes sense.

Yeah, absolutely that. As a competitive sports person, at any level, you know when you're doing yourself justice and when the effort is just not worth it. Just because you might still be better at your job than someone else, if you feel like you're letting yourself and your own standards down, it is probably incredibly hard to maintain that desire to keep pushing yourself on. A bit like any job, if you can afford to do something else, and the opportunities to do so are there, why wouldn't you take on a new path?
