This could break the record for no posts in about ten days! I could and should be there but the missus wouldn’t fly for all that time. And we missed the boat last month!

At least it wasn't our lowest ever total in the end, still seriously embarrassing though!

I was on the ‘phone to my counsellor at 27-9. An absolute f ucking disgrace of a performance. That score is marginally better than some of the scores in my school cricket days! Shocking lack of preparation, 2 "non competitive" warm up matches is not sufficient to prepare for a Test series. We've had our arses smacked and the game will be over inside 3 days I reckon. Shameful. What is to blame? The prominence of 20/20 and 50 over cricket in my mind. Test cricket is almost a sideline these days to the money making machine that is limited overs cricket. None of the players today played a "Test Match" innings, far too many wafty shots, no thought about staying in or being resilient. Go for your shots boys, the pain will be over soon!

If 20/20 was the problem then NZ wouldn't be any better. It's our problem.

Lack of preparation and scheduling play there part as does the coaching/management but the players have to take responsibility also. Lots of experienced internationals in that side. What has happened to grafting and 'digging' in to build a big innings? Have to say I am not taken with Root as a Captain either but then we don't really have any alternative. After this shambles and The England Rugby team its up to our footballers to save the nations blushes tomorrow - what could possibly go wrong....

194-7 in 70 overs, usual fare. Root bottles his position to let Vince back in. Cook is so out of form it’s incredible. Stoneman fails to convert, again. Shucks, I can’t be arsed with this tale of woe. Maybe Wood’s batting will be a ray of light..

Don't agree that Root has bottled it.
He is our best batsman by far and although I like him at 3 as far as I'm concerned you keep him happy and let him bat where he wants to.
What we need now is for our bowlers to step up and take 20 wickets in a match.
Let's hope Anderson and co take a leaf from the New Zealand seamers and pitch the ball up a bit more.
With Wood in the team it should help.

Well exhilarating and frustrating in equal measure today. Couldn’t we just do with a nuggety little character like Watling.
Going back to Root and the no 3 / 4 thing, in reality with England at the moment what is the difference, about 5 minutes? We cannot persist with Vince. Somebody earlier suggested bringing Buttler back to enable Bairstow to go right up the order. What do people think about that? Before Buttler declares time on red ball cricket.

Yes, obviously a flat pitch but you’d hope for a result now either way. Lot better from Stoneman and Vince although do these players get bored once they get past 50? The problem is the skipper doesn’t set much of an example in that respect, does he? Anybody watching the test in Jo’burg? The catch from Elgar to get rid of Paine for the final wicket is something to behold. www.thesouthafrican.com/elgar-catch-tim-paine-video/

It is rare for a player, especially the younger brigade, to establish themselves and concentrate for enough time to build a decent innings. TV doesn't help, they go absolutely over the top when a player scores a quick hundred. The value of a patient innings seems to be lost these days - until we lose a game again!

Spot on Imp, hardly any batsman can keep still in the crease now. I know coaching moves on. What would Bradman say about Smith, with ants in his pants. Or Bairstow with his bat held high.
I believe the genral public has forced the one day game to be so big. People like to see a result.
Also watching a whole test match would be near on a £1000. Going to just one day of a test is a good day out, but you do get a feeling you are missing out.

Well at least Brendon McCullum isn’t around for this last day! He’s got a bit of a rep at the Hagley Oval.

Going to be tough to take 10 wickets on that pitch but lets hope can end winter on a high
