Modern society. The yoof want it all and want it now.
No more saving months for a new TV or washing machine, or heaven forbid get it repaired if it breaks

It is a scary thing, my 10 year old girls use TikTok and they have told me about this gifting thing. Luckily they have no interest in doing it! And it isn't always just leaving the card around. We gave our 10 year old my wife's old iPhone 6 and she downloaded some free apps (that have a subscription linked to them after the trial period is over) and racked up nearly £100 of spending before we noticed. What surprised us though is that my wife had a new card issued only 2 months earlier which wasn't linked to the itunes account so couldn't understand how they got the details... A phone call to Apple confirmed it picked up the details from her Macbook and automatically updated the iTunes details! We complained and they refunded us in full, but still very scary how they can just update your details across all accounts. Needless to say we took the iPhone back and bought her an android phone instead to stop that happening again.

Something to do with the Xbox live thingy. An adult needs to enter card details to set the thing up but from there it seems frighteningly easy for kids to purchase add-ons without their parents approval. There is a massive problem with people upgrading equipment and moving on their old stuff second hand too. One person I know was having this done remotely, maliciously, and it was almost impossible to stop - the card details were linked to the the Xbox account, but you needed to log in to the Xbox account to remove the card details. If that account log in was no longer possible (due to deliberate password change for example) then you had a real problem. Money could be taken and you had no control. This particular case took some time to resolve and it was the banks that finally got to grips and stopped it. Apple and Xbox didn’t want to know. Funny that. Anyway, malicious use or not, this is a huge problem and parents need to be extremely vigilant.

We got my daughter a Huawei (same as me so I know where everything is) on Android which is linked to mine via Family Link. I can see her location, how long she's been on a particular app, lock and unlock it at will, set screen time limits, and have to approve any apps she tries to download or any purchase she attempts to make. It's not perfect, but I find it very good 95% of the time.
