Considering the low amount of overs that Bess has been asked to bowl, I would take him out and replace with Archer. I don't expect it to happen though, it seems obligatory to have a spin option in the team, although in my mind, Joe Root can play that role if required. He's more than an occasional bowler.

That went well, didn't it? Crawley becomes the latest young batsman to be hailed a real prospect, let's hope he can follow this innings up and build himself a decent career, he certainly seems to have the game for it. The only shame is this is the last test match cricket for a while.

He looks a very good player. Technically he looks ‘correct’. By that I mean it looks like he can adapt his game and play his way back into form should he inevitably go on a bad run. Compare that to the two openers and Rory Burns looked solid for a chunk of the summer but seems to have hit a dodgy bit of form, and Dom Sibley grinds away but is a very leg-side player and can get bogged down a bit against strong attacks.
I think we definitely need to stick with the current top 4 as Root said he seems more comfortable at number 4. The issue is when Ben Stokes comes back, what do you do with the lineup? I actually think Crawley could play anywhere in the top 6 comfortably (including opening) so maybe that’s a plus point. Hopefully this knock will ensure his continued run in the side and some of the others who aren’t contributing as much as we’d like may start looking over their shoulders nervously.

And another shout for Buttler as a test quality batsman? He must but must get three figures today.

I think number 6 suits Buttler better than 7. We all know he’s a good finisher but when you bat at 7, usually you’re batting with the tail once you’ve got yourself in so tend to go a bit crazy at the end and grab any runs you can get - it’s a high risk game. At 6, he’s got more time to play more like a test batsman and build an innings. Maybe the batting without Stokes isn’t so light after all?

Crawley's innings yesterday (and the one in the disrupted second test) have shown that dropping him earlier in the series probably wasn't fair on him or the correct decision. What is good to see is that there is competition for places in the line up now, at both ends of the team.

Have been watching Zak for 2 years at Kent. Everyone there has been praising him for a while, also a genuinely nice young lad. When Kent got promoted to DIv 1 his game improved with the better wickets.

Happy for Jos finding a way to succeed & for Jimmy proving that class is permanent.
