Cheers Vanni-cracking article. I had no idea that GBH and Discharge had such an influence on the thrash metal scene but it totally makes sense. One Way System kicked out a similar sound/racket but I don’t know where they were from.
Did you ever hear of the Varukers from Leamington Spa? They were hardcore too and supported Discharge a few times. The drummer Brains became a mate of mine when I was living up there during my time at Warwick University. He was a top lad with a cracking sense of humour-tall, lanky streak of piss with a ridiculous pink mohawk. Check out I Don’t Wanna Be a Victim and Dance Til You’re Dead. Fast and loud!

Sorry I've only just seen this post Shubs. Yeah The Varukers's early stuff was great. They, along with Anti Cimex from Sweden, were the first hardcore bands that played or rather 'borrowed' that infamous drum beat that Discharge had created, the D-Beat. But as much as I like Discharge, I do acknowledge the fact that the first d-beat drum pattern in a punk rock song was first heard in a Buzzcocks tune (You Tear me Up) and Discharge just copied it and made it faster still (obviously!). I never saw The Varukers as just another noisy band though, and neither were Discharge. Sure they were loud and fast but they weren't what I'd call a 'noise before music' type of band, like say Chaos UK and Disorder. Is Brains the chap in this YT video?

Wow, top research Vanni-nice one mate. Yes, this is indeed Brains the best part of 40 years after I knew him. I never even knew his proper name. When we met he introduced himself with: “I’ve got no O Levels and no A Levels, that’s why I’m called Brains!” I agree that some of their early stuff was quality although I was less struck on the Bloodsuckers album. Bands like Discord etc passed me by a bit. I used to like the Destructors though, despite the fact that they were from Peter——ugh.
