Add the sarcastic Brophy for England chant to that too then. Who says it’s sarcastic? I’ll say again, I love the guy. Obviously it’s not a literal suggestion he’s on Southgate’s radar, but tongue in cheek isn’t the same as sarcastic. We’ve used to sing “England’s number 1” at Shaun Marshall in much the same way. And whilst he had a calamity in him from time to time, I think Shaun was always well thought of by the fans. And Brophy plays along with it too which is the whole point!

Until a few years later, naturally.
My memory of Dancy Shaun is that he wasn't too bad in general, but when it when wrong it was a scarcely believable level of fuckupery.

And what fans thought highly of Shaun Marshall? Anybody? Really? The Brophy one started when the team were playing badly, and Brophy was made the scapegoat, Cheltenham wasn’t it? Sort of puts it into context really.

I feel like the Brophy for England chant may not have started out as entirely affectionate but he's reacted to it with such good spirit that he's won a lot of admirers as a result and it's now sung from a good place. I love his arc with us and I feel like anyone who isn't a fan now or doesn't understand what he brings to the side is...probably...not...very...smart.
Also, I thought highly of Marshall AND I thought he was largely garbage. I'm pretty sure you can think both. How could you not think highly of someone who would dance on command. Brilliant. What a time to be alive.

Theyve been on a wobble since before Mainning left and have only really comfortably beaten a poor Burton team.
We have a good opportunity to take something from this game.
By all accounts main threat is their midfield so of we press like we did vs Exeter then that should unsettle them. Though no doubt there will be more quality than what we saw on Friday

Sean Marshall, one of the worst goalkeepers ever to play for us. Marshall certainly does not stick in my mind as one of the worst. Would rather of had someone like Marshall than the likes of Hedge and Dunn and even then they had their good games.

Fond memories of Dancing Shaun. Brophy's a great player, even if his shots are a comfortable midriff catch for opposition goalies.

What a time to be alive. Was thinking about Marshall the other day & what an odd career it was he had. Feels quite unusual for someone to have made somewhere nearish 200 appearances in all competitions over almost a decade at a League club & for him, at 27, to then only play less than a season's worth of other professional appearances elsewhere & almost immediately transition into spending the rest of his career playing part-time at Dereha at an age that's fairly young for a keeper.

That time (between Potter and Maxwell?) was truly a nadir between the sticks.

Dunn wasn't *that* bad. Had some flaps in him but he was a cut above the other two. Was definitely a form keeper though - when he was in it he was pretty good; when he wasn't he was all over the shop. He is also the subject of one of my favourite Cambridge Utd pictures

Dunn was definitely better than Beasant, Hedge and probably Marshall too, but the nature of his cockups when he made them was generally so bad it stood out more, as a result I disliked him the most. It’s probably a case of selective memory, but I can’t recall ever seeing a goalkeeper spill more shots straight to the feet of an opponent for a tap in and it was absolutely infuriating.

Darren Bechet, and whoever that loanee (Duffy?!) was that played once and threw a shot going five yards into his goal before being bombed straight back are up there.

Bechet was alright for what he was when he was. Ayden Duffy wasn't very good though, no. Behcet went with Schumacher to be goalkeeper coach at Stoke, as it happens. Can't remember if Jamie Waite ever actually made an appearance for us. Presume he must be our only ever Thai player...
