Can we have a ranking please of the 7 goalkeepers on our books in the promotion season. Don't think I can even name them.... Maxwell, Norris, Sullivan, Smith... Joronen was that season right? Were Seigrist and Steer that season too?

After relegation in the summer of 2002 and Lionel's departure, Shaggy put his faith in Super Shaun, gave him the #1 jersey and he had a very solid season in 2002/03, including getting Division 3 player of the month (I can't recall which month). He was our first choice and the fans backed him. Sure, he had a howler in him from time to time, but so does every goalie. Particularly at this level (Dimi and Stevens have had them).
The chants of "England's number 1", "Dancing... Dancing Shaun" and "Shauny in red, he's dancing for us, week to week" were, from where I was stood at least, affectionate and positive.
Of course there's humour in some of this stuff, and perhaps some chants are tongue in cheek. In extreme examples (Colin Alcide), it's straight up sarcasm, but I have never heard Utd fans doing that to a first team regular who is one of our best players, which is the case with Brophy.
Even if I'm completely wrong and I've misread the room so to speak... I chant "Brophy for England" with love and admiration for the guy, so even if some people sing it sarcastically, it's not everyone.

Quietly confident we can win this one as Oxford are definitely not having a new manager bounce. Defence and attack pick itself currently if Ahadme is OK. Cousins is a must start if fit so either Thomas or Lankester alongside him. Probably go with Thomas myself so another unchanged line up with some changes for Steve Evans UFC team on Friday.
Can’t even I follow this game due to the usual Boxing Day family gathering but going for a 2 1 win but with no penalty this game. Ahadme and Thomas.

I remember Dancing Shaun being fairly decent until we were live on telly away at Brentford (it might even have been the club's first live game) and he was beaten from about 50 yards and we lost 1-0. I seem to remember that gave his confidence a serious knock and he was never the same again.

Yeah, certainly in that promotion season he was. I think Ice started the season but Shaun must've played 20+ times for us and was decent.

Andrew His career after United shows he wasn’t at all decent and was clearly not rated by anyone in the league, or higher non-league either. Not the worst keeper but certainly in the bottom half for us.

I meant in those 20 promotion winning games rather than anything he did at Dereham after leaving us.
...but yeah. He was below average from there on in I'd say. A friend and I were chatting loudly to each other about how garbage he is before we played up at Blackpool, only for Shaun Marshall to come and wave goofily at a little old couple standing next to us who waved back in that proud way only a mum and dad could.
Whoops(!)

Who says it’s sarcastic? I’ll say again, I love the guy. Obviously it’s not a literal suggestion he’s on Southgate’s radar, but tongue in cheek isn’t the same as sarcastic. We’ve used to sing “England’s number 1” at Shaun Marshall in much the same way. And whilst he had a calamity in him from time to time, I think Shaun was always well thought of by the fans. Sean Marshall, one of the worst goalkeepers ever to play for us. Can't remember a Sean Marshall but always felt Shaun Marshall was a decent keeper. He had same really good attributes but also capable of some howlers. In recent years, I can think of loads of keeper who were much worse. If I remember correctly, he lost his place to John Ruddy so arguably you could say it took a future England goalkeeper to take his shirt.

Completely love how he plays and it's so true that his acceleration with the ball is at the top end for Div 1.

He would be my priority for this summer’s out of contract players to re sign. But my gut feeling is that he will get a big L1 club offer or a lower Championship club will take a gamble on him despite his lack of goals. He’s always available for selection, never gets injured despite getting fouled a lot and can play in less glamorous positions when called upon and does a job there. He is our box office player since Hoolahan left and his run and assist for Wes’ goal against Stanley the other year is one of my favourite L1 moments.
And Ben Foster (the actor, not the keeper) would play him in a film.

Sign for a bigger club on more money or stay where you're happy, loved and can become a legend. It's a real Brophies choice.
