We'd be due compensation if we've offered him a pro deal wouldn't we? Not 100% how that all works these days. We would.

although I thought him, McConnell and Hoddle were given three year deals tbh. Must've just been Hoddle. Andrew There wasn't anything public about the length of the deals those 3 signed. Someone on here, on good authority, said Hoddle's was 3 years. Was just assumptions about the length of Yearn's and McConnell's. Hoddle is definitely on a 3 year contract.

I did wonder if it was competition for places, if Hoddle and McConnell were deemed higher in the pecking order, Kai may of fancied his chances elsewhere.
Disappointed regardless, as I thought we were building him up as the next big thing to come through.

Disappointed regardless, as I thought we were building him up as the next big thing to come through. That was definitely the talk 3 years ago, when he first came to prominence. Perhaps his star didn't rise as high as we had expected? It's also worth remembering, that whatever club you are at, the percentage of youth team players that make it through to a professional contract is low, even lower are the number that go on to have a successful career at that club.

Just as the whole issue of retain or release starts to fall into place (or not) I wonder if the fact that we’re in the Year of the Three Managers is creating turbulence and unknowingness. Strang’s obviously the constant in this so at least there’s a bit of continuity.
Plus not knowing which league we’ll be in next season…though I think we’ll be in good League One consolidation mode.

There is lessons to be learnt from the way we try and clear the pathway for our youngsters to break in to the first team. Regardless of the reasons, there is something wrong when our hottest prospect is leaving having not started a league game and barely featuring in squads at all since signing pro forms.
Injury has disrupted his progress this season, but he’s also lost faith that he’s going to be given a chance here. All 3 managers this season have stated they’re not afraid to use the youngsters, yet Jobe is the only one we’ve drafted in (Looks like he’s been ready for this level for months- Would he have got a chance if Morrison wasn’t injured) Are they simply not good enough, are the loans they’re going out on not suitable for the potential jump to League One Football?
We’ve seen experienced players given chance after chance this season despite putting in consistently poor performances, the players on the outside looking in would also have seen this, along with parents/agents advising them. If they’re fit and still not getting a place in the squad then they’re going to get very disheartened. Everyone has to earn the right to play, but when playing you must earn the right to keep the shirt. It is wrong and a risky path to go down if you’re keeping that shirt just cos you’re experienced.
We’ve seen with Jobe that he’s improved us as a team in his few opportunities so far, Rossi also looked very good in his 45 on Saturday, both young lads who should be the future.
A lot of time, effort and money would have gone in to Yearn and his development etc. it’s a real shame that some other club is now going to reap the rewards of that by getting him at an age where he’s only going to get better. We cannot let that happen with others. McConnell and Jobe must be offered long term contracts, show faith in them, believe in them and ffs play them if the senior pros are not doing it. Actions speak louder than words.

Spot on post, if there good enough then age shouldn't be an issue, I think when you speak up his talent and give him a decent pro deal then include him literally a handful of times in a match day squad then it's no wonder I think he has decided to try his luck somewhere else.

There is lessons to be learnt from the way we try and clear the pathway for our youngsters to break in to the first team. Agreed. Only time will tell whether Yearn ended up not developing at the expected level, or whether he wanted away. But looking at our current manager and previous two, I thought Bonner was particularly poor at blooding in younger players. He seemed overly protective of them and was very reluctant to try bringing them on when the same starting 11 was failing week in week out. I do include loaning out Liam Bennett as symptomatic of that approach. The snake wasn't here long enough for me to make a clear judgement. He played Njoku out of necessity. And I do remember him saying very clearly that Njoku wasn't ready to be part of the squad yet in an interview after Njoku came on and completely changed the game against Fleetwood. Loaning him out again was probably the right thing to do, especially with Ahadme and Fej returning, but he certainly had a lot of spark to him and was instrumental in our win again Fleetwood. I can't imagine that the snake would have had the foresight to recall Jobe. I think he'd rather have kept with Bennett and Morrison/Rossi/Okedina and then just blame them when things went wrong. Monk seems the most amenable to using younger players. Jobe being the obvious case in point. Also, subbing off Ryan Bennett and bringing on Rossi was a big call too. Both have been fruitful so far. Long may it continue. Monk's approach seems to be a complete departure from Bonner and the snake's approaches - both of whom tended towards more negative / defensive tactics. I have a feeling Monk (if he's not sacked......) may turn us into a much better footballing side.

Yearn is still only 18, for what that's worth. 1 goal and 0 assists in 20 Conference South appearances last year, then been injured for a significant proportion of this one. He's got promise, but never shown anything to suggest that we should have been chucking him into the 1st team at 16/17 years old.
McConnell was getting chances before Bonner was sacked and Simper/Worman have had ood runs in the side too. Darling had broken in to the first team before Bonner took over (while assistant), but continued and thrived. Jobe's earnt his chance with excellent form for Gateshead, but I don't think it was unreasonable to try him at that level (where it appears that Yearn didn't flourish) before League 1.

I might be imagining this but didn’t Yearn’s refusal to extend his loan at Kings Lynn go down badly with everyone. He returned but was no where near the squad. Perhaps he has just flounced.

I think Monk is in place to benefit from the way we look to integrate young players myself. Maybe we could've be a bit braver and put them in earlier but I think Bennetts path to the first team has been intelligent and patient, same with Jobe. I always feel as though defensive positions are harder to breakthrough in for a young player so I'd rather they got 50+ games elsewhere that they would have spent on the bench here.
Every situation is different of course, I get the feeling McConnell and Hoddle are slightly ahead of that schedule and I think it's easier to bring on a midfielder like McConnell or Hoddle for 15 minutes at the end of a game so hopefully they can get 20+ appearances next season. That'd be my aim with them next season anyway.
Easy not to remember that despite his professional contract Hoddle is still in his second year as a scholar, and that McConnell/Yearn are only first year pros. Both have also been injured this season as you can sometimes find when young players make that step up, and is a good reason for sheltering them to am extent.
Anyway, I wish all the development players who are leaving well.

I think you’re pushing it a bit to claim McConnell was given chances. He was brought on against Leyton Orient at their place when the game was already gone, looked good in his brief cameo but barely used after that. No problem with Jobe and his loan, clearly wasn’t going to get in here (rightly or wrongly) so went out and got some games under his belt at a decent level. You don’t get picked for England U17 unless you’ve got something about you. The idea is when you sign pro forms you improve and progress as a player, that doesn’t seem to be happening enough with us right now. Worman a prime example of someone who stagnated and was then released, Simper will probably go the same way. Okedina and Lankester were given long contracts due to being seen as assets, neither of them have progressed at the rate you would expect (Okedina has regressed if anything) but both have been overlooked sometimes for players totally out of form. If we want to stabilise and eventually improve at this level then we need to be giving chances to players that are potentially on the up, not on the way down, if we don’t, other clubs will. Yearn is still very young (Our youngest ever goal scorer I think) he’s got loads of improvement still in him, something very wrong when players like that are leaving us without being given a chance. As Martin said, I think Monk is showing signs of potentially changing the way we play, that will hopefully lead to a younger squad and help us find the next Darling, the next Berry. The whole recruitment process needs a major overhaul. The current structure isn’t working, survived by the skin of our teeth last season, should just about stay up this time round, let’s give ourselves the best opportunity of moving forward by changing what isn’t working ahead of next season.

Agree with pretty much all of that. If Yearn (or his parents/agent) have run out of patience here and want to try something new, that's entirely up to them, and I wish them well. The whole point of the loan system is to blood young players and see how they get on (as well as help crocked players get fit again, and poor ones off the books). If he'd gone to the conference south and torn it a new one, I'd personally find it a lot easier to criticise the club for not having tried him in the first team. As it is, he didn't, he's been injured a fair bit since. Wouldn't set much of an example if we'd just played him regardless of merit on the pitch/in training, would it?

You're probably right about McConnell - mainly I was thinking of him coming on at home to Lincoln in Bonner's last game and thought he'd played a couple before then, but remembered it wrong. He's 18 too, so plenty of time. I'd disagree with the idea that the current recruitment structure isn't working. It's seen us promoted and (hopefully) about to start a 4th consecutive year at League 1 level. A deliberate choice was made to sign a different profile of player last summer, which hasn't worked brilliantly but also hasn't completely failed. Unless anyone's claiming inside knowledge, none of us have any idea what's happening with Yearn. Maybe his injury's dreadful and we don't think he'll recover properly. Maybe he's the next Phil Foden and a Premier League team are poaching him. By all means speculate (that's half the fun of this board) but I don't tihnk we should be drawing too many conclusions from that speculation.
