Never been to Oakwell before, so I'm looking forward to it in that sense. The optimistic part of me thinks that Monk now has two weeks to work with the players on the grass, to study Barnsley, to set out to try to get a result. Any point will be a good result. If we lose, then I think the nature of the defeat will be very important. A solid performance by a motivated and organised team, undone by a bit of quality, I can handle. If we capitulate and lose by 3, 4, 5... I can't see how a manager can stay when we're being turned over so easily, game after game, no matter how long he's been in the job.Especially after having a prolonged period of time with the majority of the squad to try and instil some tactics and patterns of play into them. I would admit to being a trifle concerned at the moment, but I will be much more worried if the Barnsley match follows the pattern of Lincoln and especially Reading. Show me some fight, show me that we do have some hope and that you have pride in the badge

I think part of the problem is that players can't play or/and don't suit the tactics he's trying to play.
I quite like some of what he's trying to do, but it feels pretty naive to try it with this team. As much as I want to see pride in the, lets say shirt instead of badge given that we're getting shot of it, I also want to see Monk get a handle on his teams capabilities.
Either pick the players to suit the system or pick the system to suit the players.
At the very least this team should be competitive and hard to beat, as we were under Corr.

The thing that concerns me is that we might lose 2-0 and consider it a good result in the context of the last week. How dangerous would that be as a mentality?
If we get turned over again then he has to go.

Having started one of the Monk Out threads (the one without the poll!) happy enough to admit it's still very early days and at least he'll have had time to spend with the squad and work out his approach. I don't give a fcuk about identity or style atm...just do anything to keep us in League One next season.

On another note that has to be one of the best match thread opening posts I've read in a very long time.

I guess it depends how we lose, but yeah, I agree.
My reading of this team right now would be that if they give their all and still get beaten that's just as damaging for morale as getting flumped 4-0...or if not 'just' as damaging then still quite damaging.
We need a win from somewhere to maybe spark something. We've had months of plucky 'these games don't define our season's type results and suddenly realised 'actually these games might define our f*cking season after all'.
Bring it on.

Christ, full on message board tantrum if that happens (fantrum?).
Two whole weeks to think about it is absolute torture.

I could see this being seven or eight. What is the worst three results in a row, in our history? Even in our worst seasons we never seemed to lose by big margins in three or more matches. It’s possible that any defeat could be our worse sequence over three matches! Just as well we got that drawn against Northampton otherwise it would have been 7 defeats in a row.

Not sure what sat either side of that That was an interesting end to the season, two 5-0 defeats including a home defeat, followed by a 1-1 draw and a complete turn around with a 4-0 win and a 7-0 win. There is hope!

Not sure what sat either side of that Can't beat consecutive 5-0 defeats. but I can take you back to the dark dark days of the mid 80s. I give you. John Ryan- first 9 games 2-5 0-0 0-1 1-3 0-3 0-1 0-2 1-2 0-3 Ken Shellito- first 12 games 2-3 0-5 1-3 1-2 0-0 0-2 0-2 1-2 0-2 0-4 0-1 0-2 Also 31 consecutive matches without a win, still an EFL record. Even with those 2 jokers in charge the worst run of goals against were Shellito's first 3. After KS left and we had reached rock bottom a United legend returned to the club and started a revival that led to our greatest successes. Returning United legend, now let me think .... ......

I could do some quick research on our worst three games in a row but after Saturday I don't really feel like it.
