Surely he played for us there when we played 10 games or so in a 3-5-2 last season? I know he was injured for a bit of that period, but surely he did at least a few times? Indeed, looks like he was at left wingback during a couple of creditable defensive performances - the 0-0 at Lincoln and 1-1 with Ipswich and the 5-1 at Shrewsbury. I don't hate the idea, but I also quite liked the idea of having him in centre mid and that didn't seem to go very well against Reading. Edit: he actually played there in most of the 3-5-2 games last season, our record with The Broph at left wingback was W1 D3 L7. Feel like that was probably not entirely his fault.

I feel like this match is pivotable both for our season and Monks managership.
Lessons have got to learnt and acted upon from the last 2 debacles.
Can Monk do it?
Do the players have it in them?
I think we will have the answers to both at 5 on Friday.

Our last 4 results against Barnsley have been 0-2, 0-3, 0-2 and 0-4, are you really expecting better?

Indeed - these 2 games will set the tone for the last 6 - has the ship changed course or has it smashed into the Baltimore bridge.

Fully expect we'll lose this, but we should be looking to at least play well, keep it at 0-0 for as long as possible or grab a goal. Obviously hope we win, but if it's one where we play well, they play better that will give us something to work on before we get to the more winnable games

Of course I want a win or draw, but a closely faught loss would indeed in my opinion be acceptable. The tone of the match is the important thing. Another capitulation by the team and the same squad/tactics, would suggest that everything is on a downward trajectory

The quick turnaround to Monday's game also takes a bit of immediate pressure off the result on Friday but lose both and we have big problems and unlike last season, are lacking the players/management to have the motivation to find that extra quality.

It's not all about the result tomorrow, albeit a point or 3 will be very welcome; it's more for me about how we have used the last 2 weeks to shape the team, work on tactics, integrate new players into what we trying to do and give a good account of ourselves, showing that we do have enough about us in the run in to engineer our own safety, rather than rely too much on what other teams can or can't do.

The players owe Monk a performance, and critically owe us as fans a performance too. The last month has been truly awful, and not due to having a squad without any talent as that simply isn't the case. They need to shape up and play.

I don’t think anyone is expecting to win at Barnsley. But everyone is entitled to expect us to look like a team in the same division.
They haven’t won in their last 3 at home, including a thumping by Lincoln (That sounds familiar) and a 0-0 with Cheltenham. Even when they’re winning they are struggling to do so.
We have to be competitive and go in to a winnable game on Monday off the back of, at the very least, a good performance Tomorrow.
A lot of it is on the players, but Monk must set them up in a way in which they can have no excuse for a poor performance. Make Barnsley win it rather than just hand it to them on a plate.

It’s like being on the titanic,we have been offered the life boats several times eg cheltenham twice burton and Northampton at home but refused to get off the boat . Now we know the boat is definitely sinking it all seems a little to late .Our run in is horrendous and it doesn’t look good but we must pull a result out of the bag this weekend no more little Cambridge United expecting to lose to the big boys in this league back to back wins and safety is ours.up the us

Compared with the other teams around us, they're largely much of a muchness but I'd say ours is actually probably on the slightly easier end. Burton's form is as dreadful as ours and, while they have an OK game tomorrow, it's followed by a horrible next 3 and then a "good" but potentially very high-pressure final 3; Cheltenham have an OK next few but very tough final 3; Reading's aren't easy. Vale's is actually probably just about the best in there, but they're still going away to Peterborough & Bolton. Fleetwood's looks too difficult to make up >5 points but stranger things have happened. EDIT: Full list, for ease Barnsley v Cambridge United Fleetwood Town v Cheltenham Town Port Vale v Bristol Rovers Reading v Northampton Town Wigan Athletic v Burton Albion Bolton Wanderers v Reading Burton Albion v Barnsley Cambridge United v Wigan Athletic Cheltenham Town v Exeter City Northampton Town v Port Vale Oxford United v Fleetwood Town Blackpool v Cambridge United Burton Albion v Oxford United Leyton Orient v Cheltenham Town Reading v Lincoln City Wigan Athletic v Port Vale Blackpool v Fleetwood Town Bristol Rovers v Reading Cheltenham Town v Carlisle United Peterborough United v Port Vale Barnsley v Reading Cambridge United v Charlton Athletic Cheltenham Town v Bristol Rovers Fleetwood Town v Northampton Town Port Vale v Exeter City Stevenage v Burton Albion Bristol Rovers v Cambridge United Burton Albion v Cheltenham Town Peterborough United v Fleetwood Town Port Vale v Wycombe Wanderers Bolton Wanderers v Port Vale Burton Albion v Reading Cambridge United v Derby County Cheltenham Town v Lincoln City Leyton Orient v Fleetwood Town Cambridge United v Wycombe Wanderers Cheltenham Town v Peterborough United Fleetwood Town v Burton Albion Port Vale v Cambridge United Reading v Blackpool Stevenage v Cheltenham Town

It's hard when you have to divide the "no gimmies left" against the "on the beach" factor.
I'd say everyone is bricking it though, Vale fans think they were already down weeks ago, Cheltenham know they're not quite collecting points at the rate they need to, Burton seem to think their new manager may already be lined up for the chop, Fleetwood have found something that seems to work but dont have long left.
Shrewsbury and the rest will probably just have enough about them despite not being very good either.
Anything at all from Barnsley, even a narrow defeat with a strong performance, would be welcome but Monday's game only grows in importance the nearer it gets.
