Gentleman Jim Sharkey was a porter at Pembroke College when I was there. He was a true gentleman and he was always willing to talk to me about his playing days at Cambridge United (and other local non-league sides). He started his senior career at Celtic in the late 1950s.

I got him a job on Coop milk, he loved it. Also a great golfer. He always played in ordinary boots because of his deformed feet. Good friend and great footballer. Use to travel to away games with his umbrella and bowler hat.

Not sure it counts as it’s “before they were famous” but Liam Kelly (Coventry City) used to join in kickabouts with us at the local park - he was a lot younger than us though. Richard Lee was in my year at school (Watford & Brentford keeper). My younger brother can do a lot better - he was friends with Leah Williamson as she was in his class at primary & secondary school and with David Oldfield’s (journeyman, Luton, Man City, Leicester, Stoke, Boro etc etc) son. No footballing neighbours though Are you talking grammar school - AGS?

Yes, I think he lodged at The White Hart pub. That was my local and we had a pretty good darts team. Nigel loved a game of darts with us and was a damn nice bloke, no airs and graces, and always bought a round of drinks. I'm pretty sure Nigel and his wife lived off Pearce Lane Learnt after his death in 2008 that he had run a pub in Wadebridge for 20 years just down the road from us. Had a beer in there many times and didn’t even realise.

You’ll never Bill Leivers this one but Bill also lives in Cornwall aged 92. The manager who was fundamental to us being where we are today.

When I lived in Dereham, Alan Taylor was the landlord of my local pub. Even in his mid 40s, he still looked as though he could have 'done a job'!

No neighbour story but I used to play against former U Lewis Page semi regularly.
Same year in school and we used to play Bishop’s Stortford in my youth league and then we’d end up playing against each other’s schools fairly often too.
Was an odd feeling when he popped up for us. Took me a moment to realise why he was familiar and then it dawned on me that our footballing careers had taken very different paths.
