How was Enoch Powell right exactly?
Not sure what your point about the depression era is either. Are you saying it was good when jobless people and their families starved?

I dont condone the riots or those who are using it as an excuse to loot and cause damage however the opinions expressed on here will only cause a wider gap between the youth and the estabishment. As a Town Councillor in Haverhill we have had issues whereby youngsters are congregating in certain areas especially on a Friday night under age drinking, breaking bottles and generally seen as causing a nuisance. I attended a residents association meeting where the residents told stories of harrassment and physical and verbal assault by a group of these youngsters. They were so angry they were talking about going mob handed to deal with the kids as they felt the police don't help. They told stories of how they had shouted and screamed at the kids and had windows smashed in retaliation. I went to the area yesterday and sure enough the gang of youths were hanging around - I approached them and they were fine and actually pleasant to talk with they told me of the harrassment they are getting from police etc. The truth is they are bored, there is little for them to do, if they congregate in any area they are either abused by residents or moved on by the police. their life is one of constant harrassment. Should they be locked up because society is failing them? I'm sure given the chance and further abuse they would be just the same as those who have been looting and rioting. We are trying to involve the youngsters by setting up a Youth Town council whereby we can get the youth to come up with ideas to improve their lot. It is so easy to look at one side of the picture and see louts scum chavs etc. but nobody takes time to look at the other side. Just an observation PS I asked them what football teams they support but none of them were U's supporters however many had been to the Abbey - working on getting more Haverhill U's

I can't abide this argument that because somebody is bored, their poor behaviour can be excused. It just validates their actions as far as I am concerned. Get a hobby ffs!

That is indeed an absolutely ridiculous argument Andy! "Their life is one of constant harrassment (sic)" - unbelievable; even if being moved on for what I presume to be deemed anti-social behaviour could amount to harassment, which it can't, being the victim of harassment doesn't validate harassing others.

Just watching the BBC rolling news- lots of young people on the streets of Manchester clearing up. First person in court this morning in London was a teaching assistant and another was a student. These riots aren't just "young disaffected people" with no future- they are no more than opportunistic criminals.
So much for the govt platitudes that offenders will be hit with the full extent of the law. The teaching asst was sentenced to one day in prison and due to the time he had spent in custody meant that he went straight home!

Its the abuse they are given for congregating together from locals that ignites the fuse - what I am saying is you treat them with some respect they give respect back if you hound them and act aggressively towards them they act aggressively back.

The group was mixed boys and girls they want things like a dirt BMX track and fishing that doesnt cost them £5 they are willing to do things but what they do have doesnt satisfy their interests.

You didnt hear how aggressive the adult residents are when they talk about the youth in their area - my arguement is if you are aggressive towards someone you can expect to get aggression back but if you treat people with respect then you wil lget respect back - end of!
