Why was the South Stand built so far away from the pitch?

Because the intention was to then develop the NRE, which would have required the pitch to be moved up to where the South Stand is now. The NRE would have needed the space. That next part of the redevelopment never came to fruition, which left us with a stand that cost £1.1m (if I'm not mistaken) and no money generating facilities from it!

Bet we can find some great pics of The Abbey. This is one I stumbled upon a while ago, hadn't seen it before but it's bloody beautiful: I actually love this photo, even the road leading down to the ground that we walk every game works so well.

In my search for the original redevelopment plans I come accross these drawings, presumably on the old U's Net: www.cambridgeunited.com/club/abbeyplans.htmlThere were the 1st plans before being scaled back. Can't find the updated ones, but from memory the NRE was going to match the south stand. I stole pretty much that whole set of pictures for my GCSE Graphics coursework! It was something to do with updating an old building, I chose The Abbey which tied in quite nicely with what was going on at the time. I got a B!

The pitch was moved for at least one season. I stood in the freak-enclosure back then (I love it in there really freaks) and the goal being so far away from the stand was very odd.

Anyone got a copy of the 'other' NRE scheme that got approved, with the hotel at the front? Had a google, but can't find it anywhere.

I think that picture tops them all because you can't really see the impact of that dreadful south stand.
