Oh no, such a shame. Thought he may have a little longer left.
RIP Sven.

Very sad news. A decent and dignified man.

I love that he was able to make an announcement about his expected death a couple of weeks before he finally passed, allowing people to pass on messages of support and respect, both publicly and I would guess, privately. I am sure it would have been lovely for him to read those messages and be satisfied that he was loved and respected by many. That is not a gift many have, we often see those messages after a death, but of course the person they relate to will never be fully aware of what many thought of them.
I thank him for one of the most memorable evenings in England's history, not often you experience a 5-1 away win in Germany! May he RIP.

Loved Sven. Even tried to steal him from Sainsbury’s at halftime in the Denmark game. RIP you fantastic man. Life was far more fun with you in it.

RIP Sven.
I think it's a shame that so much of the mainstream media are intent on caveating his time as England manager with "but he didn't win a trophy".
Yeah, neither has anyone else in the last 58 years guys.
And sure, we had a talented squad. But so did countries like Brazil, whose current squad isn't fit to lace the boots of the team that knocked us out in the QF in Japan.
Our decline from the heights of Euro 96, through Hoddle and Keegan, left me genuinely concerned we wouldn't even qualify for 2002. Sven not only got us to three quarter finals, but brought back real hope we could compete. The demolition of Denmark and suddenly we're 1-0 up in a World Cup QF and I was thinking "if we hang on here, it's Turkey and then the Germany team we beat 5-1 only a matter of months ago.... OMG we're going to win the World Cup".
Of course, with Rivaldo and Ronaldinho / Seaman, it didn't work out. But that hope was real.
2004 was another "what if". We won that QF with a perfectly legitimate Sol Campbell goal, ruled out due to home advantage.
2006 was less controversial but equally gutting.
Thanks for the memories Sven Goran Eriksson. F**k cancer.

It was never that Sven didn’t land a trophy that defined his England legacy in my opinion. It was his love affair with the big names and refusal to pick a midfield that actually worked as a unit, preferring to shoehorn the allegedly best players into roles that didn’t suit them. I will however always credit him for being savvy enough to always include Owen Hargreaves in his squads, at a time when the role of holding midfielder wasn’t understood by swathes of English fans that hated OH, because they’d never seen him play for his club and were adamant he was useless for the crime of playing abroad, or not being a Gerrard/Lampardesque goal merchant.
Regardless Sven always struck me as a decent man who did what he felt was right. RIP.

I love the way he was able to go on a farewell tour, fulfil his dream to manage Liverpool (played one, won one), visiting and saying goodbye to many of his old clubs. Then last weekend the final goodbye from public life. Perfect.
The Amazon documentary is excellent.

Literally bumped into him at the entrance of a terminal at Heathrow when he was England manager. Always seemed a very decent human being and will always have the 5 1 and the win over Argentina as fond memories of his time in charge.

Had a great career for England but good time to hang up his boots I think. Think the same's true of Walker given we're at the start of a new qualification cycle & a new manager but sounds like he's planning to carry on.

Fair play to Trippier, been a fine servant.
Don't mind Walker sticking around though, as long as his legs don't go he's still one of the best in his position(s).

Trippier had a nightmare on his Newcastle debut though didn’t he? Can’t remember the opposition but some tinpot lower league rabble IIRC.
