I've got a day off on Wednesday to celebrate my 10th wedding anniversary. Original plan was a walk with the wife and dog followed by pub lunch somewhere.
Only problem is weather is looking a bit crap. Any ideas for a wet weather day out in the city or close by? Doesn't have to be dog friendly.

Take in a few town centre pubs, Fitzwilliam museum (or one of the others), IWM Duxford?

Break-dancing on the bridge in Lion Yard. Skateboarding in the Heidelberg Gardens. Nurse a pot of tea in the Café in Eaden Lilley's for half a day.
In all seriousness.... if it isn't hammering down walk with the pooch from Newnham to Granchester across the meadows, have lunch at the Green Man or Rupert Brook (both dog friendly) then amble back.

Given the incessant precipitation thus far.

Was curious myself. Shocker of a day. On the dog thing; would recommend starting at Fulbourn, along Fleam Dyke, up and over the All on the foot bridge and over to Balsham for lunch. Lovely. Or, into Lode round the back of Anglesey Abbey by the mill, walk through Quy Fen and lunch in Swaffham Prior. There are worse ways to spend a day. Anyway, the crap weather has curtailed today’s walk too, so here’s the killer picture of breaking the news to the dog:

Would love one when I retire.

Anyway, the crap weather has curtailed today’s walk too, so here’s the killer picture of breaking the news to the dog: I bet that dog needs some exercising! Do you live in the country? Would love one when I retire. Yep, Border Collies need a huge amount of exercise and stimulation and the circumstances have to be right for any dog ownership, but particularly a breed such as a collie. I was lucky enough (my humble side says lucky, my less humble says “f*ck it, it was figuratively and literally a journey of blood sweat and tears”) to effectively retire 5 or 6 years ago when in my 40’s. Subsequently I have plenty of free time so am able to give her the attention a collie needs. I don’t live in the country, in Cherry Hinton in fact which is why I tend to head out Fulbourn or Quy way. I’ve got a van I use for messing about and looking after one or two interests, and she’s always out and about in that and it’s a great feeling pulling over in the middle of nowhere and heading out across the fields. On that note, I’d always been pretty scathing about the fens and Cambridgeshire countryside in general, but walking a dog does bring out its best and it’s a wonderful place for ‘head-space’ and solace. I’ve lost count of the number of hours spent walking the dog and it’s never felt like a chore. Pretty sure there is evidence that supports dog-ownership being good for mental health issues and I wouldn’t argue with that. I’m hardly a dog expert but Collies can be very hard work. Exceptionally bright and hyper active which can be a blessing and a curse. Not a dog for sitting on your lap when you fancy putting your feet up with some tv and a glass of wine, but highly rewarding if you can put the effort in. I sometimes think a collie/cross would be the best of all worlds.... Anyway, I hope you are able to have similar experiences when the time is right. Yesterday:

Her name is Bess. She’s 18 months old. Razor sharp and a typical collie. I wanted to call her “Flower” because she’s a cauli (Boom boom) but the good lady wasn’t having any of it so Bess it is. A great dog but like all of the females in my life - doesn’t want to do as she’s told.....

Thanks for all the suggestions. Yes weather was awful so came up with a wet weather plan.
We went to the lockhouse escape games which was great fun on regent street and then a platter at the brewhouse. Yum.
Will be checking some of those walks out though with the dog. It even brightened up later on so got a sunny walk in later. We've got a whippet and he's ace.
